Ski Tours and Activities

Snowbasin has a cross-country skiing area with 26km of groomed cross-country or snowshoeing trails that loop around from the base area of the resort. Nordic ski equipment or snowshoes can be rented from the Grizzly Center and maps are also available here. The Snowsports School offers Nordic skiing lessons if required.

With conditions permitting, advanced and expert skiers can take a half-day tour outside the boundaries of Snowbasin ski resort. The ‘Beyond Tracks’ tours are guided by the Snowbasin ski patrollers. Make reservations with the Snowsports Learning Centre in the Grizzly Center.

Another option for powder hounds is heli-skiing at Powder Mountain where Diamond Peak Heliski Adventures offer 6-run heliski packages. They also offer single heli-ski runs. Alternatively Powder Mountain has full day Snowcat Powder Safaris. The terrain is reasonably mellow, so it’s not just suitable for advanced and expert riders.

Family Activities

Snowbasin has a 6-lane tubing hill near parking lot #2. Each of the lanes has a different gradient so it’s possible to find one for each family member. Of course, tubing isn’t just for families, and anyone else who wants a giggle can give it a go. Tubes have to be rented from Snowbasin.

Another potential family activity is a visit to the George S. Eccles Dinosaur Park in Ogden. The park has more than 100 dinosaur sculptures that come complete with sound effects – scary!

Adventure Activities

Red Cliff Adventures offer snowmobile rental or guided snowmobile tours, and are based in nearby Huntsville.

Powder Mountain has snow-kiting in a dedicated area. Equipment rentals and lessons are provided if required.

Leisure Activities

If you can’t join the Upper Ogden Valley locals in ice-hole fishing for perch, there are other leisure activities in the area. Aeroplane enthusiasts should go to the Hill Aerospace Museum, located at Hill Air Force Base south of Ogden. It houses every type of jet fighter and bomber used by the US Air Force in recent history. You can get up close and personal with a B52 and any number of other classic warbirds. Admission is FREE.

Union Station in Ogden houses three museums including a car, train and firearms museum. There’s something for everyone!

In the unlikely event that the weather hasn’t played ball (i.e. it hasn’t snowed for a few days and the forecast promises little), travel down to Moab (5 hours away) and spend some time visiting the amazing National Parks in Utah. Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, as well as Dead Horse Gap State Park are sensational. Staying in Moab in winter is dirt cheap too.
