Meran 2000 ski resort in the Val Venosta, Italy, has fun skiing & snowboarding above the delightful spa town of Merano.
The resort is known for its refined & relaxing vibe with a combination of 15 wonderful mountain huts for dining, 40km of pristine groomed slopes and an abundance of thermal spa pools & complexes at all the major hotels.

Where is Meran 2000 Italy?
The Meran 2000 ski resort sits high above the thermal spa town of Merano (a.k.a. Meran) in the South Tyrol/Alto Adige of north-east Italy. As the crow flies, the resort is only 67km south on Innsbruck and 205km north-east of Milan. Easily accessible by train from nearby Bolzano, Merano makes a great starting point for a ski safari up the Val Venosta (a.k.a. Vinschgau valley), starting with Meran 2000. Merano can also be accessed by road via either Bolzano (34km/30min) or the scenic route from Landeck-Zams in Austria (140km/2½hr).
The best gateway international airport is Innsbruck (INN) for travellers from Europe of the UK, and Milan Malpensa (MXP), Munich (MUC) or Venice (VCE) for everyone else.
With its own train station linked directly to Bolzano and hence the main Innsbruck-Verona line, the train is the recommended mode of travel to Merano. Trains to Merano run every 30min from Bolzano. Getting to Bolzano by train from Innsbruck, Milan or Venice is straight forward.

From the train station, the ski lifts begin 6km east of town at Val di Nova or 13km from the city centre at Falzeben. Both are served by regular buses throughout the day during winter. Take bus 1A for the cable car at Val di Nova (journey time 20min) or bus 225 for Falzeben (45min).
Anyone with an aversion to saving the planet and riding public transport might prefer booking a a private transfer direct from the airport (particularly efficient if in a group of 3 or more people).

If driving a rental car to Meran 2000, note that parking at the valley station of the cable car is free, but up at the gondola base in Falzeben (Avelengo), a small daily fee is payable.

Meran 2000 Accommodation
Meran 2000 overlooks the refined spa town of Merano (a.k.a. Meran). Located at around 650m altitude., Merano is generally below the snow line in this region. Its abundance of 4-star spa hotels and boutique guesthouses make for an extremely pleasant stay in winter. The expansive Hotel Therme Meran is perhaps the best known of the spa hotels, and rightfully so too! In the historic Merano town centre, there are several standouts including the Guesthouse zum Loewen.

Closer to the skiing action, the fabulous Prinz Rudolf Smart Hotel and Hotel Kiendl are located just near the cable car base. Further up the mountain side in the hamlet of Avelengo (a.k.a. Hafling) is the wonderful Hotel Hirzer 2781. At the base of the Falzeben gondola, the sensational Josef Mountain Resort Hotel provides the ultimate ski-in ski-out lodgings on the mountain.

Nearby Ski Resorts & Attractions
Meran 2000 is in the Val Venosta (or Vinschgau), a South Tyrolean, predominantly German speaking part of Italy which rises west of Merano. Away from the expansive thermal pools & spas of Merano, the Val Venosta’s stunning combination of incredible glacier-draped mountains, ice bound lakes, drowned bell towers, gorgeous ancient walled villages, castles, monasteries & ski resorts make it an all-round European ski safari location to be reckoned with.
Nearby ski resorts are all part of the Ortler Ski Arena & include the family-friendly Belpiano (Schoeneben), smaller local ski hills like Watles, plus the glaciers of Solda-Sulden & Val Senales (Schnalstal) to name a few. Back toward Bolzano, the local hill at Renon is good for a warm-up before checking out the PSSS (Powderhounds Super Secret Stash) at Reinswald!

Once in the upper valley, Austrian ski resorts are a short drive away via the easy Passo di Resia (Reschen Pass). Nauders & Serfaus Fiss Ladis lead to the Inn valley via Landeck Zams & on to the best resorts in Austria.
The gorgeous town of Glorenza (a.k.a. Glurns) in the centre of the valley is like a window into the past. A walk down its perfectly preserved 16th century cobbled streets revealing fortifications, tower gates & porticoed arcades. A stay here is why we ski Europe. No cookie cutter ski village, but a perfectly preserved walled town, only 15min drive to the nearest ski lift - the San Valentino gondola which connects to Belpiano. Throw in the amazing 12th century Marienburg Kloster in Burgusio (on the way to the nearby Watles ski area) & the 1,200 years of human history at the St John’s Abbey in Müstair (10km/12min drive west just over the border in Switzerland) and Glurns starts to seem like a European ski & culture holiday hotspot.
A symbol of the upper Val Venosta is the 14th century bell tower of Curon that juts remarkably from the waters of Lago di Resia. In winter it is possible to walk (or skate) across the ice to see it firsthand. The lakes in the upper valley are well set up for ice skating, kite sating & ice hockey, particularly the Lago della Muta (Haidersee) just south of San Valentino.
