Ski Albania

Albania has some of the most remote high mountains in Europe, and exquisite backcountry skiing & snowboarding accessed by ski, snowcat & helicopter. A nation not known for its snow sports, Albania is nonetheless a ski & snowboard adventure destination of the highest order, with a number of world-class tour operations established in recent years, many in around the deliciously named 'Accursed Mountains' that form the border with Kosovo and Montenegro.

Pros & Cons of Skiing in Albania

Pros

  • Highest annual precipitation zones in Europe
  • Two mountain ranges to explore - the Accursed mountains & the Sharr mountains.
  • Includes the highest mountain in the region - Mt Korab.
  • Stable, cold, dry powder in the side & backcountry.
  • Incredible food & hospitality.
  • Short travel times from the UK & western Europe.
  • Endless tracts of winter wilderness for the intrepid to explore.
  • Affordable adventure in a nation with an economy that will appreciate your visitation.

Cons

  • No ski areas with ski lifts.

Pro or Con (depending on your perspective)

  • English may not be widely spoken in remote regions (that’s a reason to go with a guided tour).
  • Mountain roads and transport can be difficult in full winter conditions.
  • Doesn’t have a great reputation for safe tourist travel but is fine for any adventurous person on a guided tour with a reputable company (like one's Powderhounds works with!).

Albania Skiing, Catskiing & Heliskiing

Despite having extensive mountainous & snowy regions, Albania has no major commercial ski resorts, so all skiing is by ski-touring/splitboarding, snowcat or helicopter. It is probable that some of the skiable terrain has never been ridden before, providing the tantalising prospect of adventurous first descents!

With two main ranges in the country, the ski terrain of Albania includes some of the highest annual precipitation zones (i.e. lots of snow in winter) in Europe. There are even remnants of Europe’s most southerly glaciers still existing.

At the southeast end of the Dinaric Alps (locally known as the Accursed Mountains), peaks rising up to 2,694 m above sea level include Albania’s second highest, the jagged Jezercë. The better peak of Zla Kolata (2,534m) is nearby, looming over Valbonë (Valbona). The Accursed mountains form the border with neighbouring Montenegro to the north & Kosovo to the east. The region’s high annual precipitation can provide an incredible diversity of ski terrain during winter and hence is the base for our local partner’s heliskiing operation, Heliski Albania, in the Valbona Valley. Deeper into the mountains, cat skiing is also possible with Freeride Albania near the remote village of Dobërdol. Nearby, the mountainous tri-border area where Albania meets Kosovo & Montenegro is particularly popular for ski-touring.

Further to the southeast, the Sharr Mountains, that also border Kosovo & North Macedonia, provide the second range to explore in Albania. The Sharr (Shar or Šar) mountains include the Albania’s highest Mt Korab (2,764m) on the border with North Macedonia. Less jagged than the Accursed Mountains, the Sharr provide stellar ski-touring opportunities with Korab one of the best options in the region.

Getting To & Around Albania

Albania is in the Balkans region of southeast Europe. With its west coast on the Adriatic Sea, Albania is bordered by four countries & high mountains to the north, east & south. In the north is Montenegro, east is Kosovo & North Macedonia, and to the south is Greece. To get a sense of the distance from the Austrian alps, Albania’s capital Tirana, is about 900km southeast of Innsbruck ‘as the ptarmigan flies’ but is between 1,200 and 1,350km by road (16 to 18hr driving).

The closest gateway airports are near the capital Tirana (TIA) [the Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza ( or Rinas International Airport)], or in neighbouring North Macedonia at Skopje (SKP) airport. Intercontinental travellers may have to use a European, UK or middle-eastern hub to fly direct to Tirana.

If ground transport is NOT included in your tour plans, a private transfer can be a better way of getting around than driving yourself. Search & book private drivers & transfers in Albania.

Driving a rental car in Albania is certainly possible but it requires an 'eyes wide open’' approach! If intending to drive a rental car into Albania from other parts of Europe, check the fine print as many companies will not allow it.

Driving in Albania is not for the faint of heart and comes with a few hazards common to parts of the wider Balkans. Hazards can include: aggressive driving, poorly maintained roads, plus low-speed farm equipment, horse-drawn carts and wandering livestock on the roads. If you get in trouble, police & other forms of help may be a long way away.

Reviews & More Info

The Powderhounds Europe team are constantly reviewing European ski areas or having a second or third look at old ones, but we are yet to head to Albania. Having been to Kosovo, Bulgaria & North Macedonia in the past, we expect to experience all that Albania has to offer soon.
