Vichères Liddes Ski Resort Switzerland

An 'old school', traditional Swiss ski area with wonderful larch tree skiing and wide-open powder fields, Vichères - Liddes is the best all round Pays du St Bernard ski area. If traveling between Italy & Switzerland via the Grand St Bernard Pass, why wouldn't you stop and go for a slide at this delightful ski hill?

Pros & Cons for Vicheres Liddes Ski Resort

Pros

  • Wonderful easy-access off-piste powder skiing.
  • Respectable skiable vertical of nearly 700m.
  • Gorgeous intermediate piste trails.
  • Fun freeride terrain for all abilities.
  • Uncrowded & delightfully quiet.
  • Splendid views.
  • Fantastically affordable lift pass lift pass price as part of Pays du St Bernard
  • Car park is 'ski-in' via the off-piste and free of charge.

Cons

  • Smallish number & length of piste trails limits the scope of any stay if there is no powder.
  • Old, slow ski lifts.
  • Narrow, icy access road, one way in places.

Pro or Con (depending on your perspective!)

  • ’Old School’ ski resort that brings one back to the ‘best old days’ of skiing.
  • All-natural snow with no snowmaking!
  • No accommodation at the ski resort.
  • Very limited novice access, lifts & terrain.
  • Despite the above, is overall the most ‘approachable’ of the three Pays du St Bernard ski resorts.
  • Not far off the main road between the Valais & Aosta Valley.
  • Minimal après ski & nightlife activities, but surely that’s not why you will come here!

Skiing & Snowboarding, Lift & Terrain

The Vicheres Liddes skiing & snowboarding terrain is on a vaguely north-east aspect gaining morning sun and shade in the afternoon. Around 15km of pistes doesn't sound like much, but it feels alot bigger when on the hill. The highest lifted point of 2,267m provides 672m of skiable vertical all the way down to the car park on a longest descent of over 4km.

Where is Vichères Liddes Switzerland?

The Vicheres Liddes ski resort is deep in the southwest corner of canton Valais in Switzerland, overlooking the road to the Grand St Bernard Pass that leads to the Aosta Valley in Italy.

Vichères - Liddes Accommodation

With no ski lodgings at the resort, overnight accommodation at Vichères - Liddes is limited to a few holiday rental homes & apartments plus the handy Hôtel du Grand-St-Bernard. The hotel is in the small village of Liddes, so having your own vehicle is handy to get around. The ski lift base is a none too insignificant 5½km away via the narrow road. Buses make the journey but not conveniently. Liddes has all the basics required for a stay and of course you can get some local fromage from a roadside vending machine. The Japanese would be proud! Further south along the road to the Grand St Bernard Tunnel, the village of Bourg-Saint-Pierre has several hotels with reasonable availability at short notice.

Away from Liddes, if one had to pick the most central village to stay in when exploring all the Pays du St Bernard resorts, Orsières is the best choice. At the end of the train line from Martigny and with bus and road links to all the ski areas, Orsières also has one of the best restaurants in the region at the fantastic Hôtel Terminus, unsurprisingly situated just near the train and bus station. In the centre of the eerily quiet Orsieres old town, Hotel de l'Union provides an alternative.
