Gastein Ski Resort Austria

The Gastein ski resort is actually a series of four resorts in the Gastein valley of Salzburgerland in Austria. All the Gastein ski resorts are part of the massive Ski Amadé ski pass region.

The individual resorts include Bad Gastein/ Bad Hofgastein (a.k.a. Stubnerkogel & Schlossalm), Dorfgastein, Sportgastein & the small Graukogel. In Gastein you can sport, dorf or bad - you choose!

Sportgastein has the highest lifted point in the valley at 2686m. Whilst the overall skiable vertical is a massive 1856m, the most one can ski is on the regions' longest run - the 10.5km, 1443m vertical descent Hohe Scharte into Bad Hofgastein. See the Gastein ski trail map here.

Where Gastein, Austria?

The Gastein valley is 105km south of Salzburg. The closest airports are Salzburg (1.5hr) & Munich (>3hr). The ski resorts are accessible from the airports via the train stations at Dorfgastein & Bad Gastein. Search & book train tickets to Bad Gastein here.

The Gastein ski resorts are spread across the entire valley. The distance from the base of Dorfgastein to the base of Sportgastein is a hefty 25km by road. As the resorts are not all lift linked, numerous free ski buses transport skiers & snowboarders between the various resorts.

Gastein Accommodation

With a genesis as spa holiday towns, the Gastein valley is replete with high end hotel & resort style accommodations. Lodgings can be sought in at least four separate towns.

At the bottom of the valley is Dorfgastein. Further up the valley ski lift linked Bad Hofgastein & Bad Gastein are the valleys major centres. Beyond the spa hotels of Bad Gastein, the pretty traditional village of Böckstein is the last town in the valley & the closest to the isolated base of the Sportgastein ski area.
