Annecy France
Annecy is a honeypot tourist destination with a delightful old town centre & relatively close to a host of French Alps ski resorts, including La Clusaz & Le Grand Bornand. If travelling from Geneva toward the Tarentaise & Maurienne valleys, Annecy provides a quick diversion along the way. Or if it takes your fancy, you could do worse than spend a night here.
Annecy is often described in terms of the ‘Venice of the Alps’, or as a ‘storybook’ or ‘fairytale’ town. We think that is highly exaggerated, or at least overblown. Annecy is certainly a pleasant distraction during a ski trip, and its proximity to Geneva makes is easy & quick to get to. However if you don’t ever get to visit, do not fret. There are plenty of better places in the mountains.
Pros & Cons for Annecy
Pros
- Charming, pedestrian-friendly old town city centre with historic buildings, bridges & other sights.
- Easy to get to from Geneva & Lyon.
- Fabulous outdoor fresh food market several mornings a week in the city centre.
- Within an hour (or so) drive of numerous world-class ski resort villages.
- A handful of fantastic hotels along the river in the heart of the historic district.
- White swans are available for free to be placed in the foreground of your insta-worthy photos of the Island Palace!!
- Despite comparisons to Venice, Annecy is NOT sinking!
Cons
- Doesn’t match the hype and can feel overly touristy.
- Can feel drab and lacklustre on cold, winter’s days.
- Lacks high-quality cafes.
- Limited long-term parking for day-trippers close to the city centre.
Pro or Con (depending on your perspective!)
- Snow rarely falls (let alone settles) in Annecy, though it can be quite a cold, wet city in winter. The chances of seeing the city snow-clad are low.
- If staying in the city the only place to do so is in the old town, the rest of the city is just that, a city and suburbs.
- Just too far away to be a base for a ski trip.
Skiing & Snowboarding near Annecy
Annecy is within 90min drive of most ski resorts in the Haute Savoie. And some are just over 30min away. The city is also just off the main highway route from Geneva south toward the ski resorts of the Tarentaise (i.e. 3-Valleys, Les Arcs, Tignes, Val d’Isere) and the southern Alps (i.e. Alpe d’Huez, Les 2 Alpes).
Closest to Annecy, just 30min(+/-) drive includes Le Grand Bornand, La Clusaz, and Le Semnoz (a minor regional ski resort).
Ski resorts about an 1hr to 90min(+/-) drive from Annecy include: the extensive Espace Diamont (near Flumet), and Megève, Praz de Lys, and Grand Massif (Morillon, Samoëns & Flaine), several sectors of Portes du Soleil (including Les Gets, Morzine, Avoriaz), plus Chamonix, St Gervais & Les Contamines.
Whilst it is possible to do day-trips to ski resorts from Annecy, most are just a little too far away for return journeys, so pack up & move deeper into the mountains to get to them.
Things to Do in Annecy
If Annecy is the first historic old town centre you have ever visited in Europe, you will be well pleased with it. A compact old town comes with a backdrop of snowy mountains (on a good winter's day), the requisite number of narrow, pedestrian friendly (& often colonnaded) streets & laneways, intersecting tunnels & arches, watercourses, bridges; a looming 13th century castle & other historic 14th century buildings; plus a few white swans 'swanning ' around on the river for good measure. It is easy to see why tourists are attracted to the town, but having been around a bit, we found it only held our interest for a few hours as we strolled about, but as we suggest, those less exposed to historic sites in Europe may well fall in love with Annecy.

The 14th century Le Palais de I'Île (The Island Palace) is a symbol of Annecy. It does look cool though on its small island in the middle of the Thiou River. The Thiou River is the outlet for Lake Annecy & flows through the city. Together with another small canal and a series of bridges, it provides the basis for the ludicrous moniker of ‘Venice of the Alps’. Once you have stood on the Pont Perrière and got your insta-worthy photo of the Island Palace with a few swans in the foreground, a slow lap along the pedestrian-friendly streets & lanes, criss-crossing the admittedly pretty old town is about all that is worthwhile here. You will see historic town gates, the colonnaded shops, covered passageways & historic buildings along Rue Sainte Claire & Rue de l’Ile. Strolling up Ramp du Château to the gates of the 13th century Château d'Annecy provides some cardio but little else, not even a grand view, though perhaps we are being uncharitable.
The Old Town Market runs every Tuesday, Friday & Sunday between 7am & 1pm and is well worth a visit if in the region. Cheese lovers can gorge themselves on the plethora of free tastings available.
Where is Annecy France?
The city of Annecy is the largest city in the Haute Savoie toward the northern end of the French Alps in eastern France. Just 43km by road south of central Geneva, and despite having a convenient train station, Annecy is best accessed by car from Geneva. Lyon is 140km by road (1½hr+ drive) west of Annecy via Chambery and has simpler, but longer, train connections.
Geneva GVA is the best entry point for travellers flying into the region, with the airport just 35min drive (48km) away from the Annecy’s centre and within an hour of some of the French Alps best skiing. Lyon (LYS) can be a better point of entry for intercontinental travellers, and it is just 125km (1¼hr drive) by road from Annecy.
Regional trains (TER) make the journey from Lyon Part Dieu station direct to Annecy, or with a change in d'Aix-les-Bains-Le Revard, in a little over 2hr. From Lyon airport, public transport to Annecy is more complicated, and the best option is a private transfer or rental car.
If considering a visit to Annecy from local ski resorts (or vice-versa), popular resort villages like Chamonix, Morzine and Megève are just 1-1¼hr drive away.
For day-trippers arriving in Annecy by car, parking is an issue in the town and complicates a single-day visit. All the nearby car parks are limited to just a few hours, and the cost is steep.
Annecy Accommodation
If staying in Annecy overnight, it behoves one to do so in the atmospheric old town centre. For a 5-star effect, the beautiful Les Loges Annecy Vieille Ville is the pick, or if on a tighter budget, try the perfectly located Hôtel du Palais de l'Isle.

Reviews & More Info
The Powderhounds have visited Annecy on a few occasions, the last being in early 2025. We laughed out loud when considering that Annecy is sometimes referred to as ‘the Venice of the Alps', for it is a ridiculous comparison. Venice being far more interesting!
