Where is Buitreras?

Buitreras is located near Bariloche in Patagonia in Argentina, deep in the mountains at 1,200 metres of altitude and far from civilization. Transport is included from the Bariloche airport or your Bariloche hotel.

How Does Buitreras Differ from Mallin Alto?

Operated by the Mallin Alto crew, Buitreras provides a similar remote backcountry skiing and snowboarding experience to Mallin Alto.

Some differences for Buitreras:
  • The lodge is at lower elevation and less rugged yet still wild and scenic
  • The lodging doesn't take as long to get to as it's about 20km from Bariloche whereas the Mallin Alto lodge is about 35km from Bariloche
  • The skiing and snowboarding is sled and ATV accessed whereas Mallin Alto is now primarily snowcat skiing
  • The terrain is more compact, with excellent skiing and everything closer together

Ability & Terrain

Whilst you do need to be in good physical condition, you don't have to be an expert skier or boarder to join a Mallin Alto tour. As a minimum you should be a “strong-intermediate” with respect to a variety of off-piste snow conditions. Much of the terrain is wide open with plenty of room to manoeuvre. Experts will still have fun and there are various rock features for launching if you wish.

The ski and snowboard terrain includes a little tree skiing when there is fresh snow and cold temperatures.

Please get in touch if you have any questions.

Uphill

The fast tracked vehicles and snowmobiles are utilised for the uphill so you can enjoy skiing or snowboarding down. The adrenaline and speed of the snowmobiles, and the comfort and safety of the ATV tracks are the added value in your skiing journey. With fast vehicles it shortens the time between descents, so you'll get plenty of vertical in.

Equipment

You need to have a helmet and your own snowboard or skis (fat skis are recommended). Ski and snowboard rentals are available in Bariloche if required. All guests can be provided with a beacon and backpack with shovel and probe, but BYO if you have it.

Guides

The backcountry guides are locals with IFMGA mountain guide qualifications. Each guide takes up to a maximum of 6 guests plus there are experienced staff to drive the snowmobiles.

Whether you go to Buitreras for 2 days/2 nights or 5 days/5 nights, each trip starts and ends with travel in the late afternoon. What to Pack

You’ll need to pack reasonably lightly because there is somewhat limited space on the UTV for oversnow transport.
  • Ski or snowboard equipment and clothing
  • Avalanche safety gear (beacon, shovel, probe) if you have it, or you can use the Mallin Alto equipment, including an airbag backpack
  • Swimming attire in case the hot tub is fired up
  • Keep warm clothes (e.g. jacket, beanie, gloves) at hand for the trip up. Guests usually go up in the covered UTV but there’s always a chance of jumping on the back of a snowmobile.
  • Warm casual clothes – the refugio doesn’t have central heating and whilst there are plenty of open fires and wood combustion stoves to stay warm, it’s best to layer up

What Not to Pack

  • Your hairdryer as you won’t be able to use it
  • Fancy clothes – casual clothes will be quite acceptable

Lodging

Buitreras glamping is definitely rustic, but it has many creature comforts such as gourmet cuisine, a nice fireplace and pot belly stoves, comfortable beds, and ensuite bathrooms with wood fired showers.

It’s geographically isolated and this is also part of the appeal. You really feel like you’re getting away from all the hustle and bustle of Bariloche and your everyday life.

Guest Rooms

Buitreras has 3 dome guest rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. There are two domes for up to 3 guests and one larger dome for up to 4 guests.

Room allocation is dependent on the number and mix of other guests.

Communal Area

There is a communal area with living space and a dining area and a charming fireplace.

Food and Drinks

Following the family tradition, in Buitreras the meats are locally produced by the team and then roasted in the old Patagonian way. All the ingredients are organic and carefully selected to meet the demands of the chef.

The team maintain an extensive list of signature and regional wines, as well as local handcrafted beers. The cuisine is a mixture of creativity and abundance, of low heat and good wine, of laughter and pleasures. Eating at Buitreras is just another adventure.

Facilities & FAQs

Part of apres ski can include the hot tub and dry sauna, because there is no better place to rest after a long day of riding. Next to a drink, you can contemplate snowy peaks, Andean condors and the most beautiful sunsets.
