Kolasin Ski Resort Montenegro
Kolašin is the largest ski resort in Montenegro. Just 80km by road northwest of the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica, the resort is a combination of the previously separate Kolašin 1450 (a re-branded ski resort area first established in the early ‘90s) & the newly developed Kolašin 1600 ski areas. The two ski resorts were connected in season 2021/22 as part of a huge lift development and terrain expansion that is still underway.
Skiing & Snowboarding, Lifts & Terrain
Looking to draw in international tourists to boost the local economy, the master plan for Kolasin has the size of the ski terrain tripling by the year 2030. For season 26/27, a gondola, two high-speed chairs and a surface tow are slated to go into a new sector, nearly doubling the size of the ski area. Wow!
With currently only around 45km of piste trails on about 650m of skiable vertical, one wonders whether its size and current highest lifted point of 2,070m is enough to guarantee sufficient snowfall and make it an attractive option for international visitors. Perhaps the lure of the ski terrain expansion to 250km of pistes might do the trick. We are dubious but shall see for ourselves.

Where is Kolasin, Montenegro?
Kolasin ski resort is the Balkans of southeast Europe and can be easily reached from the major airport in Montenegro, Podgorica Airport (TGD). Flights are available from all from all over Europe with airlines including Austrian, Ryanair, Turkish, Wizz and of course, Air Montenegro. They fly into the airport from origins such as Vienna, London-Stansted, Istanbul, Milan Malpensa, Barcelona, Basel/Mulhouse, Budapest, Cologne, Dortmund, Hamburg, Ljubljana, Maastricht/Aachen, Malmö, Memmingen, Rome-Fiumicino & even Zurich.
The main base resort village of Kolašin 1450 is 80km (1¼hr drive) via the A1/M9 highways from the airport. The actual town of Kolasin is 10km west of the ski resort and is conveniently situated on the main railway line to Podgorica to the south, and Belgrade to the north. Train travel can be slow though, mainly due to aging rolling stock and speed limitations on questionable sections of track.

Kolašin Accommodation
The accommodations available in Kolasin are in the ski resort base villages of Kolasin 1450 and the more exclusive Kolasin 1600, as well as along the approach road or in the nearby town of Kolašin, 10km to the west.
At the ‘top’ of the resort in the newly established Kolasin 1600, not surprisingly situated at 1,600m, the best (and perhaps only) place to stay is at the fancy, massive 4-star Swissôtel Resort Kolasin. Away from the hotel, services are limited or still under construction at Kolašin 1600. This is very much a ski resort still in its development stage and clearly targeted at the higher end of the market.
Despite being established for longer, the resort village at Kolašin 1450, situated at the base of the ski lifts at about 1,450m(!), is still a development in progress. A huge number of lodgings are/have been built, and most within a short stroll of the lifts & terrain but whether they are bookable for holiday-makers is another question. One that is bookable is the reasonable Keystone Residences. Around 2½km down the road from Kolasin 1450, and set in the forest at around 1,200m altitude, are the brand-new apartments & chalets at Mountain Retreat. They look amazing, but do not come cheap! There are few affordable apartments available near the ski lifts too.
The vast majority of accommodation is away from the ski resort in the town of Kolašin, where the selection of hotels & apartments is huge. Situated at less than 1,000m elevation, the town is a well-established, pleasant centre for mountain tourism with all the services that one could expect. Lodging options range from the affordable, but still high-quality, Pansion Kolašin, the mid-priced Nordic Nest Kolašin or Dream House Hotel & Spa, and the higher end Modern Mountain or 5-star Wulfenia Hotel & Spa.
