Slovenia Skiing
Slovenia is a mountainous European nation dominated by the dramatic Julian Alps which extend from its border with Italy to the west & Austria to the north. Slovenian ski resorts lack the scale & diversity of their larger Alps neighbours but can still provide a fantastic winter experience for anyone looking for somewhere different to ski.
We are planning to ski several Slovenian ski resorts and visit local sights this coming winter on a road trip when snow hits the Julian Alps. We intend visiting Slovenia’s highest altitude ski resorts including Vogel and Krvavec, plus the popular, yet bemusing and relatively low altitude, Kranjska Gora. Additionally, the tourist honeypot town of Bled and the nearby Triglavski National Park will be on our list of things to do because we suspect that they will be important elements of any ski trip to the region. All are within a relatively short drive of the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana.
Worth knowing is that in the east of the country, Mariborsko Pohorje (a.k.a. Maribor) is the largest ski resort in Slovenia by size. The lifts extend from near the edge of Slovenia’s second largest city, Maribor. Despite having a reasonable 35km of pistes and potentially 1,000m of skiable vertical, the ski area’s low altitude (base at 330m and highest lifted point of 1,330m), eastern location, and somewhat weird terrain strung out along a forested ridge made it a questionable proposition for powder hounds.
For many, Slovenia may seem to be a distant, exotic ski destination, however the reality is the mountains of northwest Slovenia are just 2½hr drive south from Salzburg and less than 3hr drive east of Venice. Not as far as you think huh?
