Oberstdorf Ski Region Germany
Oberstdorf ski region combines the German ski resorts of Nebelhorn, Fellhorn & Söllereck, with Austria's Kleinwalsertal skiing areas, for stellar, snow-laden piste freeride skiing over a huge region. Nebelhorn (translates to Foghorn in English) has one of Germany's longest ski runs (7½km) on a massive skiable vertical of over 1,400m. Fellhorn is very popular with groomerhounds wanting to ski across the border into Austria. And Söllereck is the perfect place for beginners to hit their stride. Pistes aside, the real reason to visit is for the powder that arrives with winter storms. The region is known for deep snow-packs in the high alpine zone & powder-hunting freeriders should take note and watch the weather forecast!
The total Oberstdorf - Kleinwalsertal ski region has over 130km of pistes all under the one lift pass, with all the disparate areas linked by free local ski buses. The highest lifted point is in the German sector on the summit of Nebelhorn at 2,224m. The highest lifted point in the Austrian sector is at Ifen where the top lift goes to a relatively uninspiring altitude of 2,030m altitude; but it is more than enough to attract a lot of snow in this region, and Ifen often has the deepest mid-winter snowpack in Austria. Check out the ski trail map below.
Lift Passes
As well as the reasonably priced combined ski area lift pass for all of Oberstdorf-Kleinwalsertal resorts, Indy Pass is also valid in the region. Additionally there are other cheaper options including a 3hr all resorts pass, an hour long pass for Nebelhorn, day tickets for all the designated 'practise lifts' in Kleinwalsertal, plus a day pass specific for Söllereck only.
Where is Oberstdorf Germany?
The ski region's major town (& namesake) is Oberstdorf, where the Nebelhorn ski lifts extend up from the city limits. The town is a major transport hub located very close to Austrian border in southern Germany. Oberstdorf can be easily accessed from Munich city centre or airport, as well as Zurich. It is possible to take a train from Munich (MUC) international airport and be in the centre of Oberstdorf in as little as 3¼hr. From Zurich (ZRH) airport in Switzerland, Oberstdorf can be reached by train in a little over 3hr (depending on connections). From Innsbruck the best way to get to Oberstdorf is by rental car via Reutte, with a journey time of under 2½hr.
Whilst the Kleinwalsertal sector of the ski region is part of the Austrian Vorarlberg state, there is no road or public transport access from greater Austria at any time of the year, let alone during the ski season. All access is via Oberstdorf Germany.
Worth knowing is that all public car parking in the region at the base of the ski lifts has minimum daily charge of €5 (25/26 price). Some undercover parking (like at Nebelhorn can be more expensive). taking the bus might not save you any money either. Sadly the mostly free buses in the region start to cost money once you cross the border into Austria. So a journey from Oberstdorf to Ifen requires one to pay for a ticket as the bus crosses over into Austria. A ridiculous system for an allegedly fully integrated ski region!
Oberstdorf Accommodation
Oberstdorf is a sizeable, pretty town and the gateway to the region with a train line terminating right in its centre. A huge variety of accommodation is available in town, some next to the Nebelhorn ski lifts. Wonderful hotels & guesthouses are intermingled with some excellent farm stays.
