Obersaxon Mundaun Ski Resort Switzerland

Obersaxon Mundaun ski resort in Graubünden has widespread skiing across numerous cute Swiss villages (extending over into Val Lumnezia), but with surprisingly mundane, undulating terrain that will only be of interest to novices and intermediates. If seeking a cross-country ski tour using lifts, this is your place, otherwise head elsewhere!

Pros & Cons for Obersaxon Mundaun Ski Resort

Pros

  • An expansive ski area with a multitude of pretty Swiss villages to visit on skis.
  • Decent skiable vertical of over 1,060m of which much of it can be skied in one hit to a variety of destinations.
  • Good piste trails for beginners & intermediates.
  • Some ski-touring options from the upper reaches of the resort.
  • Multiple piste ski trails up to & over 13km long.
  • Can be fun ski tour on lifts connecting the many peaks & villages connected in the resort.
  • Loads of novice ‘learn-to-ski’ areas throughout.
  • Fantastic range & extent of non-ski winter activities for all ages including a 10km long sledding trail all the way from Cuolm Sura down to Ilanz.
  • Excellent public transport links via Ilanz to all the base villages, and an easy drive from the valley. All car parking is free of charge. All the local buses from Ilanz to the ski resort are free to use during the winter season.

Cons

  • Complex interconnecting pistes, sledding & winter walking trails but the paper ski trail map is without any piste numbering, plus the on-ground signage & piste numbering is very poor.
  • Many connecting ski trails include lengthy uphill sections, often requiring snowboarders in particular to walk.
  • Some low elevation villages may not have natural snow throughout winter, particularly on the sunny south aspect.
  • Limited piste (& off-piste) for advanced skiers & snowboarders.
  • Lacks long uninterrupted fall line ski terrain.
  • Disappointing on-mountain restaurants that lack any character whatsoever and have drab, expensive menus.

Pro or Con (depending on your perspective!)

  • Surprisingly limited snowmaking compared to the overall ski terrain.
  • Long, backside ski runs require a bus ride to get back to the ski lifts (but to be fair, the buses are quite regular and free in winter!).
  • A place you will either loathe or love depending on your skiing wants & needs. It met very few of ours but may be paradise for someone else with a different set of expectations.

Where is Obersaxon Mundaun Switzerland?

The Obersaxon Mundaun ski resort is in canton Graubünden, southeast Switzerland, just 160km (2hr drive or 2½hr by train/bus) south of Zurich. The canton capital and major transport hub of Chur is 45km (50min drive) to the east of the ski area. The closest major town & railway station is at Ilanz, less than 15min drive away (or 20min+ on a local bus!).

The closest gateway airport is Zurich (ZRH), 167km (2¼hr drive) away. By train via Chur & Ilanz the journey can take less than 3hr to any of the ski resort villages.

The recommended way to get to Obersaxon Mundaun is by train/bus or if planning on doing a regional ski safari, a rental car.

The main Obersaxon Mundaun village of Meierhof is just 11km (15min drive) from the valley town & main train station of Ilanz. By bus (free in winter), the route 451 PostAuto bus does the journey from Ilanz train station in around 20 to 35 min depending on the number of stops.

In the other direction to the sunny south-aspect Val Lumnezia side of the ski hill, by car from Ilanz to the ski lift base at Vella is less than 10km and takes just 13min. The route 441 PostAuto bus does the journey to Vella from Ilanz train station in around 20 min.

Obersaxon, Mundaun & Val Lumnezia Accommodation

The ski resort encompasses a dozen or more mountain villages spread across both the colder, more shaded north-aspect Obersaxon Mundaun side of the resort, and the sunnier, more south-aspect Val Lumnezia side of the ski area. All the villages to the ski lifts via free local buses, so in reality one can anywhere and ski the resort effectively. however, some locations are better than others, simply based on size and access to useful ski lifts & trails. On the Obersaxon Mundaun side, our recommendation would be to stay in either in Meierhof or Misanenga. in the Val Lumnezia, the village of Vella (Lumnezia) (at 1,280m altitude) is best.

A worthy and cost-effective alternative to the many small ski resort villages near the ski resort is the larger town of Ilanz. Well connected to all the Obersaxon Mundaun villages by local public bus (& quick to get to by rental car), Ilanz can act as a base from which to explore all the ski resorts in the immediate region.
