White Wilderness Heliskiing Canada

White Wilderness Heliskiing Canada is where the wild meets serenity and bliss. White Wilderness Heliskiing has a blessed location in the mecca of skiing on the north-central coast of British Columbia near Terrace. Snowfalls are prolific and the heliski lines are often deep, with the added bonus that the snowpack is generally consistent, unlike some of the fickleness of the mountain ranges in the Interior of British Columbia. The Tsimshian First Nation people call this region "Ganeeks Laxha" which translates to “stairway to heaven”. That sums it up!

White Wilderness Heli Skiing in Canada provides great powder skiing, with hectares galore of peaks and untouched snow. WW Heliski offers small group heli skiing, and for both the mixed group packages and private packages, the experience is boutique in nature. The goal of WWH is to create unparalleled experiences both on and off the mountains.

All packages offer unlimited vertical. Every day is a powder day, and there are more freshies than you’ll know what to do with.

White Wilderness Heli Skiing Packages

The most popular undertaking is the Classic Package, which is open for solos, duos and small groups. Each group has up to 4 skiers/snowboarders and a guide, with up to 3 groups using the helicopter. The standard is a 7 day package that includes 7 nights lodging, unlimited vertical and a guarantee of 30,500 vertical metres of heli skiing. During some weeks, it’s also possible to book 6 night/5 day or 5 night/4 day heli ski packages.

If you have your own group, a semi-private or private package is another option.

Lodge

The Skeena River Lodge is home to White Wilderness Heli Skiing during the winter months. It’s been recently renovated and is a deluxe rustic lodge with inviting communal areas in which to relax. The guest cabins have two queen beds and an ensuite bathroom. The package includes chef prepared meals. See the lodging tab for more information.

Helicopters

White Wilderness Heliskiing use the Ferraris of the helicopter world. The A-Star helicopter is powerful and agile, and a by-product of the small heli is that your guided group will only have a maximum of 4 guests. This has safety advantages, and the other pro is a higher probably of being grouped with others of a similar ability level.

Where is White Wilderness Heli Skiing Located?

White Wilderness is located on the Northern British Columbia Powder Highway of Canada and is just south of the Alaskan border. The location is deep in the wilderness on the Skeena River, yet it’s very easy to access because the town of Terrace is just 30km away.

Terrace Airport (Northwest Regional Airport) is serviced by flights from Vancouver and Calgary and the flight time for both airports is just 1:45 hours.

You don’t need to worry about highway or mountain pass closures or renting a car. The staff will pick you up from the airport and drive you to the lodge, which is about 20 to 25 minutes away. Or if you want to arrive in complete style, the lodge is a 5 minute helicopter flight from the airport.

White Wilderness Heliski Terrain

White Wilderness Heliskiing Canada has a massive tenure of 3,200 square kilometres (about 800,000 acres), offering a seemingly endless number of untracked powder runs. The lodge is centrally located within the tenure, so the abundant lines are readily accessed. The central location is also key, as there are some protected zones close to the lodge for days when it’s snowing.

The terrain includes long glaciers, a diversity of other alpine areas, and glades and tree skiing for low visibility days. The terrain includes runs for strong intermediates as well as experts-only runs.

The maximum elevation is 2,800 metres and run length varies from about 650 metres of vertical up to 1,000m. Each package includes unlimited vertical. Typically the first heli lift is about 0815 and you’ll ski until 1600 or 1630, depending on conditions and the state of your thighs.

Snow

Aptly named, the wilderness is a mass of white during the ski season, with lots of peaks coated in deep layers of snow.

A major pro of this region is the abundance of snow, and the region is cited to score 15 to 30 metres (50 to 100 feet) of snow annually. Moisture-saturated air rises from the Pacific and together with the drier, colder, high-altitude location in the heart of the Nass and Hazelton Ranges, great snow conditions are created. The snowpack is more stable than various heli ski operators that are further to the east in the Interior of British Columbia.

No Fly Days

Naturally all that snow doesn’t fall from blue skies and heli skiing companies have “no-fly” days when big snowstorms roll in. White Wilderness Heliskiing is no exception and down days occasionally happen. Options for alternative activities include skiing at Shames Mountain, cross country skiing, ocean boat adventures, and the potential for fishing for spring steelhead. There are also nearby opportunities for curling, ice skating and a shooting range.

Or you can relax about the lodge in front of the fire, sit in the hot tub or one of the saunas, and rest the body in readiness for the following day.

Safety

Safety is a fundamental part of the culture at White Wilderness Heliskiing. The guides are there for your safety. They’re there to find you the best possible skiing. They’re there to host you on the first of many trips of a lifetime, in the mountains they love, whilst doing their utmost to keep you safe.

WWH value safety above all else. Risk is a part of life, and risk is a part of the heli ski experience, yet the team endeavour to do everything that can be reasonably achieved to mitigate that risk by making solid, informed and well-balanced decisions in the mountains.

All of the WWH guides have been trained to the highest and most rigorous international standards. Each is a member of either the ACMG (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides) or the IFMGA (International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations). Each guide also holds certifications through the Canadian Avalanche Association and has emergency wilderness medical training.

White Wilderness Heliskiing is a Full Member of HeliCat Canada, a national standards association which is dedicated to developing and holding its members accountable to the highest operating standards in the industry; to supporting research programs that will better land use practices; to educating the team and the public about current trends in safety and risk management; and to promoting the continual improvement of the helicopter and snowcat skiing industry.

All guests are provided with an avalanche beacon, avalanche airbag backpack, shovel, probe, and radio. A comprehensive safety briefing is provided to all guests, which includes the use of the safety equipment.
