Chatter Creek Cat Skiing

Chatter Creek cat skiing is the largest Canada snowcat skiing operation, and it’s also the biggest in the world! Any cat skiing is fabulous, but big is always better!

Chatter Creek has more fresh powder lines than a powder addict could ever dream of, and the powder is gorgeously deep, light and dry. A powderhound’s skis or snowboard are highly likely to chatter with excitement at the thought of all that pow!

Safety

Chatter Creek cat skiing puts a very strong emphasis on safety. Like all BC cat skiing, the guides are very well qualified, but Chatter Creek also has a dedicated full time snow safety officer. Sometimes Chatter Creek uses explosives to aid with the avalanche control work, and guests have the option to rent a Snowpulse Lifebag, a backpack that deploys an airbag in the event of an avalanche.

Chatter Creek Cat Skiing Packages

Chatter Creek provides amazing 4 & 5 day cat skiing holidays (with 3 & 4 day cat skiing respectively) that will create ever lasting memories. Over the Xmas period and late season, 3 day trips (2 days cat skiing) are also on offer....

Where is Chatter Creek?

Chatter Creek is located about 100km north of Golden BC, which is 265km west of Calgary.

The Chatter Creek heliport (where the helicopter transfers depart from) is located in Donald, which is a 30 minute drive north of Golden. If you need a few days to warm up before cat skiing, you could head to the Kicking Horse ski resort just outside Golden. Alternatively you could limber up at Revelstoke ski resort which is only 125km southwest of the Donald heliport.

The cat skiing trip starts at the heliport the afternoon before the first day of skiing. Guests are transported to the lodge via helicopter so you’ll need to pack lightly, but Chatter Creek is a pretty relaxed place so you won’t need to wear a tuxedo or ball gown to dinner!

Chatter Creek Cat Ski Terrain

The Chatter Creek cat skiing terrain is massive! The terrain is 283 square kilometres (more than 58,000 acres), of which about 75% is skiable. Better yet, this vast area and all that deep powder is only shared with a maximum of 36 riders and their 6 guides.

The terrain is between 1,500 and 2,900 metres of elevation, making it the highest Canada cat skiing, so the temps are cold and the snow stays light and dry. Much of the BC cat skiing is below the timberline, yet with Chatter Creek about 65% of the skiable terrain is up on glaciers and in the alpine where the views are amazing. The Vertebrae Glacier is Chatter Creek’s pride and joy. It provides an outstanding glacier skiing experience, which is somewhat unique for cat skiing.

The remaining 35% of the Chatter Creek terrain consists of tree skiing amongst the blower powder.

The average daily vertical covered is 12,000 – 20,000 feet per day, which is somewhat dependent on conditions, daylight hours, and the speed and ability of the group. Skiers and snowboarders must be a strong intermediate or better.

Talk about spectacular! Chatter Creek sits in one of the most picturesque zones in British Columbia and if you're not impressed with the scenery you'll definitely be blown away by the riding. Our three day trip we were treated to some awesome riding from steeps, trees and some awesome pillow lines.

Chatter has it all. If you're looking for a little apres after a hard day shredding the pow, Chatter has that too. With a fun staff, no team, Chatter takes care of you from incredible meals to some down home fun in the Chatter Bar and Rec room. This is a great place to hang out sipping a down a few cold ones and checking out photos and videos from the day's shred fest. They have an awesome on staff photog/videographer working there who puts on some damn cool slide shows and videos during your stay.

It's a big, fun adventure at Chatter.

Note-The fun factor gauge below does not go high enough! Just saying!!!

I spent four magical days at Chatter Creek late season 2012, and left knowing I was spoiled forever. Our guides Ian and Rachel led us through awesome, varied terrain and were able to cater to the abilities of the whole group so that we all had a blast (with encouraging words to the slower folks and pointing out sweet lines to the chargers). The tree skiing is outta this world - steep, deep and long. The views are stupendous: there are some 360 degree panoramas that will make you giddy.

Don't get me started on the food! Every day you get a hot breakfast with tons of options (and great smoothies!), a packed lunch of your choice, an apres-ski snack in the lounge, and then a gourmet dinner. Kudos to the kitchen staff for producing high-quality, tasty food. I think I definitely put on a pound or two, despite full days of skiing. :)

The staff is fun and approachable. We left feeling like we made lasting friends. Everyone has a smile on their face at all times - I probably would too if I got to live and work at Chatter Creek. Make sure to go to the morning stretch class to limber up for the day.

I would definitely recommend Chatter Creek to others. I already have. We had a blast and can't wait to go back.
