Kleinwalsertal Ski Region Austria
Kleinwalsertal combines Oberstdorf with incredibly snowy Austrian & German ski areas (including Ifen, Walmendingerhorn-Heuberg, Kanzelwand-Riezlern, Nebelhorn, Fellhorn, & Söllereck) to form a diverse skiing region with fantastic freeride powder opportunities when it snows. The region is of interest to Powderhounds due its geographic location, as it receives incredible snow totals when storms approach the Alps form the north. Despite their relatively small stature, the Ifen (Austria) & Nebelhorn (Germany) ski areas often have the deepest alpine snow-packs in the Alps.
The region boasts 130km of varying piste trails and 48 ski lifts of various types across the region. The skiable vertical is longest in the German sector at Nebelhorn near Oberstdorf, where the low 813 metre altitude base climbs to a picturesque 2,224m at the summit for a huge total of 1,411m. The ski down gets VERY spicy in parts too. In the Austrian sector of Kleinwalsertal, the longest skiable vertical is at Walmendingerhorn where a 770m drop is possible from its 1,996m highest lifted point. The highest lifted point in the Austrian sector is at Ifen where the bergstation is at 2,030m altitude. the main action for powder seekers is in the upper reaches of both Ifen & Walmendingerhorn.

Where is Kleinwalsertal Austria & Oberstdorf Germany?
Whilst Kleinwalsertal is part of the Vorarlberg state, there is no road access from greater Austria at any time of the year, let alone during the ski season. The nearest major transport hub is the nearby southern German town of Oberstdorf, where the fabulous Nebelhorn gondola extends up from the city limits. Oberstdorf can be accessed from Munich (MUC) airport by train in around 3½hr, or from Zurich (ZRH) airport in a little over 3hr (depending on connections).
If coming to the region from Innsbruck Austria, the best way is with a rental car via Reutte in Tirol.
Kleinwalsertal - Oberstdorf Accommodation
Anyone visiting the region can stay in a range of accommodations from the fantastic German town of Oberstdorf to all the way up the valley to the smaller Austrian villages of Riezlern (the largest of the three), Hirschegg, & Mittelberg. All the towns, villages & ski lift bases are connected by a comprehensive ski bus network, but you have to pay for a ticket if using a bus to cross the border into Germany.

Reviews & More Info
The Powderhounds reviewed Kleinwalsertal in January & February 2026 and have mixed feelings about the experience. Busier than expected but with a couple of interesting sectors for powder seekers, one of the best things about skiing at Kleinwalsertal was staying in the fun German town of Oberstdorf!
