Hochkönig Ski Region Austria
Hochkonig ski region sprawls from the lift base at Maria Alm in the west to the interconnected Mühlbach in the east as the crow flies for a hefty 15km. By road the distance between the two points is about 23km, and by ski trail & lift its closer to 30km. And so one gets a sense of the scale of Hochkoenig ski area. Yet despite its size, which includes 120km of piste trails, we have been reluctant to spend any time here. The main reasons include its relatively modest highest lifted point of 1,900m being the exception rather than the rule in this ski area, and its terrain providing more of a cross-country ski tour on lifts - not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just not our favourite thing!
But are we being churlish? Perhaps. Afterall, Hochkönig is not far from the incredible Skicircus Saalbach, and much of its ski terrain is on a ‘snow-preferred’ north-aspect. Add in long runs of up to 9km and a skiable vertical in the realms of 1,100m and it starts to sound quite interesting. Mountain lovers will also appreciate the splendid backdrop of the Berchtesgaden Alps which includes the ski region’s namesake, 2,941m high Hochkönig.
