Romania Skiing

Romania has numerous ski resorts, plus backcountry, cat & heli skiing throughout the Carpathian mountains. A handful of destinations are worth a visit, including two near Transylvania's infamous 'Draculas Castle' (a.ka. Bran Castle) ....

The best ski areas include Muntele Mic which is the Romanian centre for freeride, cat skiing & heliskiing at the far western end of the Carpathians. In central Transylvania near the historic city of Brasov, the ski resorts of Poiana Brasov and Sinaia are amongst the largest in Romania. Sinaia ski resort has Romania's biggest skiable vertical (1,000m+), Peles Castle at its base, and a train direct from/to the capital Bucharest.

Romania is in eastern Europe surrounded by the Black Sea to the east, Ukraine to the north, Hungary & Serbia to the west, and Bulgaria to the south. tHe capital of Romania is Bucharest, located in the far south of the country, but only about 150km away from the nearest mountains. With the ski resorts near the city of Brașov over 1,350km (14hr+) by road east of Munich, most visitors to Romania will elct to fly into Bucharest's main international airport, Henri Coanda Otopeni International Airport (OTP). Flights to Bucharest are possible from most major & several minor European & UK airports, plus Istnabul, Dubai and a handful of others. Intercontinental ski visitors to the region are best to use major hubs like Munich (MUC), Frankfurt (FRA), Zurich (ZRH), Milan Malpensa (MXP) or Paris (CDG) to fly to Bucharest.

Joining a guided ski tour is an easy way to experience skiing in Romania, however a rental car provides the ultimate tool for experienced independant travellers. Trains from the capital's major București Nord (Buscharest North) railwaty station can be used to access some of the ski resorts, including Sinaia and Poiana Brasov.
