Limone Piemonte (Reserva Bianca) Ski Resort Italy

Tucked away in the deep south of the Piedmont region near the city of Cuneo, and just 45km north of the Mediterranean Sea coast, resides the curious snow-magnet of Limone Piemonte ski resort. Also known as Reserva Bianca (the White Reserve!), during a classic ‘retour d’est’ winter weather pattern, Limone Piemonte can get pounded by masses of snow and was worthy of our attention in the very strange 25/26 season. Limone and nearby Prato Nevoso gained alot of attention with storms concentrating on the region for several months whilst much of the Alps remained dry.

Is it worth visiting? Absolutely. Relatively few freeriders are chasing powder here, the main village is gorgeous & fun, and the terrain holds just enough secrets to be provide a fabulous adventure. However there are some caveats, with temperature being highest among them (being so far south). If planning a visit to chase powder, ensure temperatures are low and a day or two of good visibility is in the forecast. If powder is not your thing, visit any time there is top to bottom coverage.

Pros & Cons for Limone Piemonte Ski Resort

Pros

  • Receives huge snowfalls during retour d’est weather events in winter, and often when the Alps receives nothing.
  • Limone Piemonte village is gorgeous and lively.
  • Extensive on-piste & freeride terrain for all abilities except beginners & novices.
  • Quality fall line freeride ski terrain if you know where to look!
  • Uncrowded during the week and during winter storms.
  • Fun après ski throughout.
  • Excellent, high-quality restaurants & bars throughout the resort and villages.
  • Exceptionally good value lift pass price.
  • Easy to get to by train from Turin or beyond (we travelled there by train from Visp in Switzerland without any problems).

Cons

  • Southern location & some low elevation terrain can mean huge temperature & precipitation fluctuations.
  • The Q.1400 & Limonetto sectors have numerous ancient, slow chairlifts.
  • Several key ski lifts may not run during the best winter storms & in times of low visibility.
  • Not much for beginners & novices.

Pro or Con (depending on your perspective!)

  • Accommodation away from Limone Piemonte village (i.e. Q.1400 & Limonetto) is quiet.

Skiing & Snowboarding, Lifts & Terrain

From a ski lifts & terrain perspective, Limone Piemonte has a more than respectable skiable vertical of over 1,000m; up to 80km of pistes & ski routes (that feel quite expansive); and 16 lifts (incl. a gondola & 11 chairlifts). The highest lifted point in the ski area is just below 2,100m altitude, and whilst certainly not the best, the elevation is more than enough to catch the majority of the snowfall in the region, with most of the lifted ski terrain situated in the zone above 1,400m a.s.l. Numerous chairlifts at the resort are ancient double chairs, but the most important ones a faster moving quads. Check out the Limone Piemonte Ski Trail Map below.

On piste, despite having a few 'black' runs, the terrain is best suited to intermediate skiers & snowboarders. Nearly all of the advanced trails are doable for intermediates and if fully open, there are trails to keep one occupied for a long time across the entire resort. There is surprisingly little for novices and beginners. the long beginner run above Q.1400 (34a) is a snow-covered summer road that is quite flat is parts, but still a handy asset to have (especially for popping in and out of the off-piste!). Elsewhere, in the low-elevation base area near Limone Piemonte, a separate beginner zone with a double chair & surface tow is perfect for first turns, weather and snow permitting.

Off-piste, Limone is sensational on a powder day. During the storm, most of the trees are too tight for skiing but with some local knowledge there are sectors that are doable. When the weather clears after a storm, there are big freeride descents worthy of lap after lap. Dropping from the top of Alpetta (or variations of such) and exiting via ski route#1 is super. The zone in and around ski route #4 is incredible, with massive variety on both sides of the valley. note that the steep fall-line terrain skiers left of the Cabanaira chair is avalanche prone, but serious fun when its safe to ride. Exploration here is the key and use the ski routes and pistes as exits.

Storm riding can be difficult here due to the closure of several important chairlifts when the visibility is low and snow is blowing. And the ski lifts are certainly a mixed bag. A modern gondola gets one up into the action from Limone village. Six quad chairs range from high-speed types down to an unavoidable, excruciatingly slow one that links into Limone Q1400. Several double chairs adorn the hill, several of which were probably installed prior to most of the skiers being born. It matters not though, because other than on a few sunny weekends, there is no hurry to get around the hill. Novices can utilise a low elevation sector near Limone village that comprises a double chair and a longer platter tow.

Lift Pass

Daily lift pass price is highly variable throughout the season. Buying online saves a few euro, but it is the date that dictates the price variation of up to nearly €20 (on an adult day pass) from one day to the next. Regardless of what you pay, the lift pass is one of the more affordable in Europe. An interesting quirk of the ski resort is that the Scandinavian SkiPass is valid here for up to 5 days!

Snow & Weather

Limone Piemonte comes into its own during 'retour d'est' or 'Genoa Low' winter storm events when loads of moisture are channelled into the mountains of the southern Piemonte. But like everywhere, whilst it is great on its day, the resort’s southerly location, relatively modest highest lifted altitude and close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea can act against it. Take a close look at the forecast temperatures (freezing level well below 1,000m is critical) is before heading on a Limone storm chase and you won’t be disappointed. Get it wrong and the powder day you hoped for could turn into a still enjoyable 'elephant snot' skiing day, or worse ...... r@#n!

Where is Limone Piemonte, Italy?

Limone Piemonte is located around 120km (just over 1½hr drive) south of the Turin (Torino) city centre and just 6km north of the French border. The closest major town is Cuneo, 28km by road to the north of the ski resort. A fantastic aspect of the ski area is the wonderful access by train direct to the main village of Limone Piemonte. Trains from Turin (Porta Nuova station), usually with a change required at Cuneo or Fossano, take around 2 to 3hr depending on the number of stops. From our experience, the trains are modern and comfortable but services in the middle of the day are prone to cancellation (for reasons unknown to us). From the train station, most hotels in Limone are within a short walk.

Limone Piemonte Accommodation

Anyone visiting the region overnight can stay at the bottom of the mountain in the sizeable village of Limone Piemonte, or higher up at the smaller, but more snow-sure hamlet of Limonetto & the resort-style village of Limone Q1400. Each their merits, but from experience, we think the best overall place to stay is in the main village of Limone Piemonte.

Limone Piemonte village has a stunning old town centre, with a sizeable number of great bars & restaurants. The town square is beautifully lit at night, and the town's many lanes are fun to explore. Hotels range from the higher end Hotel Fiocco di Neve to the more approachable Hotel Marguareis. We stayed at Hotel Marguareis and found it to be perfectly located on the edge of the ‘old town’ just 5minutes walk from the gondola, well-priced and with convivial owners.

Closest to the gondola, Grand Hotel Principe is the place to stay for quick access in the morning. Other of note include the affordable Hotel Tripoli La Margherita, and the apartments at the centrally located Villa Teresa. Closest to the train station, the Limone Palace Aparthotel has a variety of doubles, triples & quad-share rooms.
