Mavrovo Ski Resort North Macedonia
Mavrovo Zare Lazareski ski resort has a reasonable range of lifts & facilities in North Macedonia. The resort highlights include a respectable 600m+ skiable vertical, 13 ski lifts & over 27km of piste trails. The main issue (and its a big one) is altitude, which can seriously impact snow quality. So if you had to pick between Mavrovo & Popova Sapka, the latter with about 500m higher lifted altitude probably wins in these warming times!
Check out the Mavrovo Ski Trail Map below.
The ski lifts at Mavrovo are a mixed bag. The single seat Korja chair is over 60 years old and you will age appropriately when riding it. It can be avoided by using the newer Mavrovo 2 double chair (year 2000 vintage) to get up into the heights. Surface tows do the majority of the uphill work above the treeline.
Surrounded by a national park of the same name, Mavrovo ski resort provides superb access to limitless backcountry ski touring & freeride terrain around Mt Korab (2,764m) on the border with Albania & the fourth highest peak in the Balkans. And that is definitely a reason to come here.
Where is Mavrovo, North Macedonia?
The Mavrovo ski resort is in the Balkans nation of North Macedonia, about 125km (2hr by road) southwest of Skopje International Airport (SKP). Review
The Powderhounds hoped to review Mavrovo way back in 2020 but not much went to plan then did it? More information will come once we visit sometime in the hopefully not too distant future, but we make no promises. Stay tuned for our new photos & insights.
