Kranjska Gora Ski Resort Slovenia
Kranjska Gora is a popular ski resort in Slovenia that, but for the life of us we do not understand why. At face value it appears mediocre at best, poor at worst. A small ski resort that for years has had just 475m of skiable vertical and a woefully low highest lifted point of just over 1,290m, it seems to attract way more attention that it ought. It IS incredibly family-friendly though and apparently quite a good location to learn to ski.
Good news for season 26/27 is the finalisation of the Vitranc 2 chair, increasing the skiable vertical by 250m (to over 600m) and up to an altitude of 1,550m ish. A big improvement for sure but one that still has us scratching our heads as to what all the fuss us about. The skiing terrain is limited to around 20km of mainly short beginner & intermediate pistes on cold, forested north-aspect slopes. The longest run somehow squeezes out to 2½km. The 15 ski lifts include 5 quite modern quad chairs. We do wonder whether the forests are skiable off piste. Suppose we will just have to find out for ourselves.
Situated in the Julian Alps, the region can (and does) get serious BIG snowfalls during particular winter storm cycles. The nearby Italian ski resorts of Tarvisio (20km) & Sella Nevea (37km), plus Austria's Gerlitzen (40km) & Nassfeld (60km) provide a reason to drop by Kranjska Gora to fulfill our research requirements.
Before we get there to see it for ourselves, check out the Kranjska Gora Ski Trail Map below.
Where is Kranjska Gora Slovenia?
The Kranjska Gora ski resort rises above the village of the same name in northwest Slovenia close to the borders of Austria & Italy on the northern side of the Julian Alps. It is less than 40km (35min drive) west of the Slovenian tourist honeypot town of Bled, and just 90km (over 1hr drive) from the capital Ljubljana. For perspective, Salzburg Austria is just 200km (2½hr) to the north of Kranjska Gora, and Venice Italy (well the airport anyway!) is just 230km (<3hr drive) to the southwest.
Kranjska Gora Accommodation
The pretty town of Kranjska Gora is splendidly surrounded by the Julian Alps and comes with oodles of high-quality accommodation. Maybe that is its ‘secret sauce’? For skiers the best places to stay are slopeside at either Hotel Alpina or Apartments Bedanc. Otherwise, may as well drive on to Bled and check out the castle and lake!
