Skiing in Greece
Skiing in Greece is possible in the high mountains that extend from the northern border with Nth Macedonian & Albanian, all the way down the centre of the country to the south and beyond to the island of Crete. Yes, skiing on Crete. Surprised? Don’t be. As with the mainland, there are mountains on Crete up to 2,456m (Mount Psiloritis) and whilst there are ski lifts per say, the backcountry skiing can be absolutely wonderful. On the mainland the highest mountain is one of the many peaks of Mt Olympus at 2,918m, plus a host of other mountain ranges that reach well over 2,400m+.
The highest ski resort in Greece is the small Voras - Kaimaktsalan on the North Macedonian border. It's lifts reach a highest lifted point of 2,480m just below the top of the third peak in Greece, Kajmakčalan. The largest & best known Greek ski resort is Mount Parnassos. Its 35km of pistes & ski routes, plus incredibly modern lift system is located in south central Greece just 120km from Athens.
