Braunwald Ski Resort Switzerland
Historically known as one of the snowiest places in Switzerland, Braunwald is now one of the first better-known Swiss ski areas to cease winter ski lift operations due to climate change. One of those classic Swiss ski resorts where the skiing is just a small part of the entire experience, from winter season 26/27, skiing from the lifts will cease to an option.
Accessible by train to Linthal station and then a funicular from the valley up onto the mountain plateau, the resort combined all the things that delight winter visitors - alpine skiing, winter-walking, ski-touring, sledding, cross-country skiing, mountain vistas and cute villages. Even with the alpine skiing now not an option, there are still plenty of reasons to visit the region. The funicular from the valley up to the car-free village will still be operating during winter.
Check out the Braunwald Ski Trail Map below from previous winters and consider the possibilities for fun, safe (& quiet) ski touring.
Where is Braunwald Switzerland?
Braunwald is in the central-eastern Swiss canton of Glarus just 80km by road southwest of Zurich. A car-free village, any trip to Braunwald will involve a 7-minute uphill ride in a funicular. The funicular valley station is near the Linthal train station & car park. By train, a journey from Zurich main station to Braunwald takes just over 2hr (including the funicular) on the S25 line.
Braunwald Accommodation
Despite the sad news of the demise of winter ski lift operations, many of the Braunwald's hotels will still be open over winter. If visiting a car-free Swiss village with lots of winter possibilities try a few nights at the still new Panorama Hotel Braunwald which will remain operating. The local après ski hut Fuchs Gadä will still be operating too, but with adjusted hours to cater for winter walkers & ski-tourers.
