Tashkent Uzbekistan

The vibrant city of Tashkent is the gateway to any Uzbekistan ski or snowboard adventure, and it’s also worthy of a stopover for a couple of days. Staying in Tashkent offers an opportunity to soak in some genuine Uzbek culture, see the charm of the old town with its bazaar, mosques, and strange fascination with mausoleums.

Tashkent is an ancient city on the Silk Road, yet after an earthquake in 1966 some historic buildings were destroyed. As to be expected, Tashkent has plenty of Soviet style architecture, if you’d call it that. Thankfully there seems to be a resurgence for charming Central Asian buildings, yet Tashkent is not in the same league as Samarkand for its impressive architecture or with Bukhara for the historic streetscapes. Overall Tashkent is mostly a very modern city, especially relative to Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan or Almaty in Kazakhstan.

Where is Tashkent?

Tashkent, the capital and largest city of Uzbekistan, is in the northeastern part of the country. It sits close to the border with Kazakhstan, at the foothills of the Tian Shan mountains.

The Tashkent International Airport (Islam Karimov Tashkent International Airport) is just to the south of the city. It is serviced by many airlines such as Turkish Airlines and Uzbekistan Airways, and receives direct flights from many cities in Central Asia, other parts of Asia, London, New York, and some parts of Europe. You can look at flight options here.

Ski Resorts Near Tashkent

Amirsoy Ski Resort is 88km by road northeast of the city of Tashkent. Amirsoy is a modern ski resort with some great freeride terrain, along with some limited piste options for beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders.

Just to the east of Amirsoy is Beldersay Ski Resort, which is undergoing major development and will be connected to the slopes of Amirsoy.

Just to the northeast of Beldersay is the primitive Chimgan ski area, which is also pegged to undergo a major transformation and be connected to the other two ski areas.

Tashkent Hotels

Hotels in Tashkent provide very good value for money, especially during the winter months. There are classic western chain hotels, Tashkent hotels with some Central Asian character, and old Soviet era hotels if you want a taste of that.
