Walmendingerhorn - Heuberg Ski Resort Austria
A decidedly strange ski resort in the Kleinwalsertal, Walmendingerhorn-Heuberg has a meandering, mediocre low elevation sector which vaguely connects to the more inspiring higher altitude zone where a good powder hound will find some joy on the right day. When all the lifts are running, the upper mountain terrain on Walmendingerhorn has some of the best fall line ski terrain in the region. Connected by a long 60-year-old cable car from Mittelberg village, the Walmendingerhorn terrain may be short in vertical but is seriously good fun on a powder day. On the descent from the summit, a stop in the excellent Max' Hütte is mandatory!
For better or worse, the 40 person Walmendingerhorn cable car is being replaced for season 26/27 by a larger, modern 80-person cable car. Whilst the morning lines in the valley will be shorter & quicker, the fresh lines on a powder day will be proportionately disappearing faster too! Price of progress we suppose!
The ski area connects to nearby Ifen via the free Pendelbus. Bus connections between the Kleinwalsertal villages and the major town of Riezlern (at the base of Kanzelwand ski area) are free too, however the bus crossing the border into Germany to fabulous Oberstdorf will cost you! Before we add more, check out the ski trail map below.
Walmendingerhorn – Heuberg Accommodation
The accommodations available near Walmendingerhorn-Heuberg are lining the road and hillside (mountainside?) all along the base of the ski area in the villages of Mittelberg and Hirschegg. Whilst they have some absolutely fabulous hotels & other lodgings it honestly just doesn't have the vibrance of nearby Oberstdorf. So unless you are happy to spend all your time in said hotel (some of which do have awesome swimming pools etc), and if you have your own transport (rental car or own car), we suggest staying in Oberstdorf.
Away from Oberstdorf, the local villages do give you a more authentic Austrian ski experience. If staying close to the important Walmendingerhorn cable car is a goal, then Mittelberg is the better choice.

At the lower end of the ski resort, Hirschegg spreads along the hillside from its reasonable village centre all the way down the bottom of the Parsenn lift toward Riezlern. The most lux place to stay, with its eye-popping pool & spa area, is the 5-star A-ROSA Ifen Hotel Kleinwalsertal. Located near the Parsenn chondola down from the village centre, the hotel is one of those places where you will not want to leave. Alternatively there are loads of fantastic, family-run guesthouses providing a more traditional, authentic Austrian experience. Many include self-contained apartments including Gästehaus Büchele Kleinwalsertal or Gästehaus am Berg
