Ikenotaira is located on a quite shallow angle slope of Mount Akakura that gradually increases in angle the higher up you go. What that means for everything in bounds is that there aren’t really any nooks and crannies, and the trail layout caters mostly to beginners and low intermediates, even at the top.

Where this place really shines is the easy access off-piste and backcountry. When conditions are on, particularly on stormy days, this is the place to be. The areas between trails are easy pickings for some carefree, well-spaced tree skiing that Japan is known for. The hardcore powder hunters often give this place a miss due to the low angle and elevation, but it’s not too low of an angle to where you’d struggle to gain any speed, unless you’re dealing with a monster pow day.

I picked this spot to do my first ever ski tour this past winter, and the straightforward nature of the terrain and great conditions made it the perfect place to experiment. It was a moderate storm day, and I made it up to about the 1750m-ish mark before descending as I was alone, and any higher would start get me into somewhat more avy-prone slope angles. On the way I saw maybe 2-3 other people. The ride back down was bliss, as the trees are slightly thinner above the top lift, but still thick enough to give you that classic Japan tree skiing aesthetic.

I came back here on the last day of an avy safety course 5 days later, and with a fresh top up the previous day on top of the snow from my first visit, there were still freshies to be had in both the backcountry above the resort and inbounds off-piste. I stuck to the area directly above the resort, and I’m not sure what drifting off to skiers right what get you into. The first few hundred vertical meters look tasty from a topo map, but you can also see what looks like the beginnings of a not very small ravine, and I heard running water coming from that direction, so I’d imagine any egress would be hairy to say the least. For obvious reasons skiers left is a no-go hahaha.

In short, beginners will like it here. Intermediate to advanced folks trying to get their first taste of skiing powder will LOVE it here provided the conditions are on (which they often are). Experts looking for a challenge can head elsewhere though.

Great ski resort with a real Japanese-feel. There are in-bound tree runs for advanced skiers/riders and the widest/emptiest/well-groomed runs for beginner/intermediates. I spent a season living in the village - a beautiful town and people! One thing - bring cash! There's no ATM. Other than that, very family-friendly.

Very small resort, and the day I went there the valley was suffering from a heat wave. It was also raining. There was only one lift open due to wind and rain, meaning there were two accessible runs at the bottom. There was one restaurant open which was over crowded.

None of this should deter you as this was just one poor day and any other day would be powder and sunshine. There are two terrain parks, one was accessible on the day we were there. From what I understand it is easy to access the back country. The runs at the bottom were well groomed and very wide and mellow, perfect for beginners but the runs further up the mountain do not get much more advanced until you are past the boundary.
