Iceland Classic Heliskiing Program

Heliski Packages on the Troll Peninsula Iceland

Overview

Heliski the fabled Troll Peninsula with exclusive access to the longest runs & best summit to sea skiing in Iceland. Combine world class heli-skiing with the Northern lights, midnight sun, volcanic activity, hot springs & a unique Viking culture for a true ski adventure experience.

Heli skiing packages are available from February to June, with powder well into April & often beyond. In small groups of 4 skiers/snowboarders & 1 guide, you will ride the best lines in Iceland. Package duration is generally 4 or 6 days, however single day & 2-day heliski packages can also be available. Full private customised packages are also possible, just ask!

Ski Terrain & Vertical

The Troll Peninsula is every skier's dreamland with about 90% of the mountains skiable, meaning there are not many cliff faces or flat spots. The mountains are the perfect mix of steep to very steep couloirs and faces to wide open low angled glacier runs.

What really sets the Troll Peninsula apart from any other heli ski destination is the fact that you can ski up to 1,300m runs all the way down to the ocean. There are plenty of slopes for skiers of all abilities from very extreme terrain suitable for the pro riders to nice and friendly areas for the first time heli skier. The mountains of the Trolls are up to 1,500m (or 5000ft) high but you can in many cases ski that entire vertical all the way down to the ocean. The average heli ski run is around 900m (or 3000ft) in vertical drop.

Due to our northerly position there is no tree skiing in Iceland. In fact the local joke is that if you get lost in an Icelandic forest, you just need to stand up. So if you are scared of big nasty tree wells, Iceland will feel pretty safe!

Average vertical on a Classic program is 6,000m/day (20,000ft). Based on the included 4 or 6hr flight time, most groups will ski 24.000-36,000m (80,000 - 120,000ft ) of vertical during their stay. Extra runs from €3500/flight hour (divided between group pro-rata i.e. an extra 20min flight would cost €1167 divided between the group of 4 so €292/person).

To view the full program, see the Itinerary tab.

Snow Quality

The snow pack is predominantly coastal and in the springtime we are skiing powder in March and April, to excellent corn snow in May and June, with the occasional powder dump well into May. What really makes the snow good is the small temperature difference between night and day which makes for perfect corn snow, never too deep and never too hard. This also means we have for the most parts very stable snow in terms of avalanche danger so we can ski steeper and more exposed lines than you would normally do heli-skiing. Another good thing about our great corn skiing in the second half of the season is that skiers that would usually not dare venture on a heli-skiing trip where deep powder skiing skills are a must can come here and enjoy themselves just as much as the experts.

Location & Transfers

The lodge & helipad are located in the mountains of the Troll Peninsula near the village of Dalvik in northern Iceland. The closest major town & airport is Akureyri, 45min drive away. All ground transport from/to Akureyri airport & the lodge is included in the package. Akureyri Airport (AEY) can be reached by domestic flight from Rekyjavik Airport (RKV). Flights to Reykjavik from international origins land at Reykjavik's Keflavik International Airport (KEF).

Accommodation, Food & Facilities

Lodging

Klængshóll Lodge, or Raven Hill Lodge in 'Ski Valley' as it would translate to in English is the main base of operations for the Classic program and ancestral home of the company founders. The property sleeps up to 16 guests based on double occupancy and includes a spa house with sauna, hot tub and massage room, yoga and stretching room, and game room.

The recently refurbished Lodge is an ancient sheep farm that's been continually habited from the time of the settlement of the Vikings in Iceland in circa 850AD. The last sheep farmers at Klængshóll were the grandparents of Arctic Heli Skiing's founder Jökull Bergmann, and he grew up on the farm working as a shepherd in the mountains of the Troll Peninsula.

The Klængshóll property consists of 4 cabins, the main farmhouse, a bath house and the barn. The current farmhouse was built in the late fifties and maintains the classic appearance of the houses built in that era with a large kitchen/dining room which was the heart, soul and meeting place of the whole family in those days and many bedrooms of varying sizes. Another classic part of the architecture of these mid twentieth century farm houses is the large entry way used in the preparation of foods for storage and many other tasks. The exterior is white-washed with a bright red roof, keeping in tradition with the color of a most Icelandic farmhouses.

The old farmhouse now serves as our dining area and lounge. All meals are served in our country style kitchen/dining room and prepared by the amazing chef Heimir Hannesson, one of Iceland’s premier chefs. The focus is on local products such as organic lamb and fresh fish, with great emphasis on using what nature provides in the region. Vegetarians and guests with special dietary requests need not worry for Heimir is well versed in preparing meals for all types of diets. The dining room is well stocked with a selection of locally brewed beer, spirits and wine. You can visit our Dining page for details on the food you can expect during your stay with us.

We ski right to the door of Klængshóll Lodge on one the signature runs ´The Horse’, giving you over 1200m or 4000ft of vertical descent right back to the front door of your private cabin.

Guests will enjoy the luxury of the new traditional style cabins for sleeping. Each cabin is made up of 2 separate "apartments" and all apartments have mountain views. Each apartment has an upper loft with a double bed and a single bed on the main floor so a couple can sleep upstairs, or one guest can sleep upstairs and one downstairs for maximum comfort and privacy. Each room has a bathroom with a shower and all the comforts of a remote heli ski lodge, with the added bonus of being very traditional in style, where every detail has been thought out to make your stay as comfortable and memorable as possible. The 4 cabins at Klængshóll comfortably sleep up to 16 guests & each includes high-speed internet, blackout curtains, down duvets, bathrobes, hairdryers, a coffee machine & mini refrigerator stocked with beverages.

Perhaps no place at Klængshóll is as important or popular as the Barn, which used to hold the winters supply of hay, but has now been restored to house our ski and boot room, ski shop, where our ski techs prepare your skis as well as our very own gift shop. The Barn is also where you will enjoy your après ski snacks and cold drinks at the end of the day, hanging out by the wood burning stove in the comfortable yet rustic lounge. TERMS & CONDITIONS

Arctic Heli Skiing (AHS) Terms & Conditions are standard in the heli skiing industry. Due to the costs involved with heli skiing and heli snowboarding we have strict payment and refund policies. We also require guests to purchase travel insurance as our terms and conditions are absolute. Please familiarize yourself with our cancellation and refund policies prior to booking a program with us.

CANCELLATIONS

All ski and snowboarding packages start and finish on the specified dates and have been offered as a complete package. There are no refunds, partial or full for any of the following reasons.
- Late arrival or early departure for any reason
- Sickness or injury
- Lack of skier ability or fitness

Deposits are non-refundable. If you need to cancel your trip after having paid the deposit or balance the following options are available:
- Your ski package is transferable to another person*
- If AHS is able to find a replacement for your space then your package payment can be deferred to a ski package in the next season.
*If you find a person to take your spot we will credit any payments you have already made to the balance owed on the seat. It is between yourself and the person replacing you to sort out payments/reimbursements between one another.

Cancellations must be made by email. If cancellation is received 95 days or less, prior to start of confirmed package then entire trip price is owed and non refundable. Arctic Heli Skiing reserves the right to cancel any heli skiing package at anytime. Should this occur a full refund of payments, including deposit, less 3% administration fee will be given.

REFUNDS

No refunds are given in whole or in part for unused days within the package due to late arrival or early departure. If you decide to come in early from skiing or snowboarding during your program or to not ski at all no refund will be given should the guaranteed flight time not be reached.

There are occasions where we are not able to ski due to weather, a mechanical breakdown, conditions, or an unforeseen emergency. Should the entire group not reach the included flight time of the package the unused time is averaged over the group and refunded at 2,600 EUR per hour of unused time. Should guests on our Ultimate Package not fly for a day the refund policy is 2,600 per day divided amongst the group.

GREENLAND PROGRAMS: There are many costs associated with locating helicopters, flight hours and getting highly qualified guides to Greenland that are nonrefundable. Another big cost in the package is the Greenland Airport Authority which charges for operating commercially within the country. This cost is also non refundable.
That being said if we have problems with the weather and we do not fly the minimum hours we do try to sell them as extra hours to other groups throughout the season. In this case we are able to refund groups that did not achieve their hours, however this is not something that we can guarantee.

DEPOSITS, REGISTRATION & PAYMENT

Each guest should familiarize themselves with the booking process on this website. This will ensure that you pick the best package for your needs and that you a have a full understanding of what a heli ski trip/ski package entails.

A non-refundable deposit and a completed registration form are required within 1 week of the reservation date to confirm your reservation. The deposit is 35% of your total package price. The exact amount will be calculated and sent back to the guest in the reply to his initial booking request.

To secure your space, final payment is required 95 days prior to commencement of your package. If booking less than 95 days prior to start of ski package full payment is due to confirm and secure the space.

LIABILITY

Each guest will be required to sign a RELEASE FROM LIABILITY, WAIVER OF CLAIMS ASSUMPTION OF RISKS AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT. By signing this agreement/waiver you are giving up certain legal rights. This agreement/ waiver must be signed and witnessed at our lodge before the guest is allowed to ski. This is part of our helicopter and avalanche safety briefing upon your arrival. Refusal to sign this waiver will result in cancellation of that guests ski package with no refund of any sort.

INSURANCE

Because of the costs involved in heli skiing we require that each guest purchase trip or holiday cancellation insurance in addition to medical, personal and travel insurance. This insurance should cover emergency helicopter evacuation. Arctic Heli Skiing has partnered up with Global Rescue and World Nomads in offering heli skiing specific insurances to our guests. Please visit our Insurance page for further information.
