Bariloche is the gateway to various Lakes District destinations so it seems compulsory to spend at least a few days in this town aka city.

Parts of Bariloche offer amazing vistas across the lake and mountains, although it’s not quite in the same league as the phenomenal Villa la Angostura. The town and the buildings are ageing and aren’t quite as cutesy as other Lakes District towns, but the Patagonian twist on the Swiss alpine architecture is still pretty attractive.

Bariloche has plenty of buzz and nightlife and it is usually crazy busy and full of Brazilians, hence the nickname “Braziloche”. I personally preferred the quieter towns of Villa la Angostura, San Martin and Esquel, but that’s just my opinion. The liveliness of Bariloche is a pro or con depending on your perspective and preference. Similarly, some will enjoy the slight seediness and underbelly of Bariloche, whilst others will want to avoid it. If you fit into the latter category, a good option is to stay on the outskirts of town where there are some gorgeous and tranquil accommodations.

Due to abundant options for accommodation and dining, Bariloche generally provides very good value for money. Another obvious pro is its proximity to the huge Cerro Catedral ski resort.
