Tohoku Powder & Backcountry Guiding

With almost limitless backcountry and very few foreigners, you will be blown away with the untouched lines you will get to enjoy in Tohoku. Design a guided Tohoku trip and experience the best of Tohoku, which is the last frontier of Japanese powder and culture.

Guiding for your private group (ie you can't join a mixed group as a solo) is provided for a minimum of 5 days. You can book just the guiding or book a more inclusive package that includes lodging, some meals, and lift tickets. You can customise the regions you want to include or ask for advice on an ideal trip.

Tohoku is completely off the radar for most gaijin. It’s divided into 4 main zones stretching up Northern Honshu. Starting with the Aizu and Bandai area in the south, then Zao and Yamagata in the middle, Morioka and the mountains surround Iwate-san (see Iwate ski resorts), and Hakkoda and Aomori City in the north. Dotted throughout these regions are countless resorts and backcountry zones just waiting for you.

The timing of your trip is up to you, although it depends on guide availability, and guiding need to be booked well in advance. If you want to check about guiding availability you can make a booking request.

Terrain Type

Depending on the group's ability, fitness level, and desire, you can just explore the lift serviced terrain at ski resorts, which includes sidecountry (so avalanche safety equipment is compulsory). Or a short boot pack or traverse here or here can get you some pretty amazing lines, but that's up to you. Or you can do a lot of ski touring or split boarding if you wish. The guides are keen if you are.

Ability Level

In order to get the most out of guiding, as a minimum everyone in the group should be a strong intermediate off-piste and be comfortable riding powder in trees. If you are a beginner or intermediate it is recommended that you book a private instructor as you'll get more out of instruction than guiding.

The guides can only guide to the lowest ability and lowest fitness level in the group. If you have a friend that’s slow and the rest of your group is fast then you may have some issues getting as much out of the trip as you’d hoped. You either need to be happy that you are going slowly and accessing mellow terrain or you need to pick your posse to be of the same ability level and desire for chasing powder.

Also keep in mind that mixing skiers and snowboarders is possible but it can limit your terrain choice and preferred line. Skiers can traverse hard, step up and pole out of flat spots so this opens up larger areas of terrain. Conversely, snowboarders read a mountain differently and want to smash long wide open turns and hit drops and features.

Itinerary

The general aim is to feast on powder during the day and then feast on amazing Japanese fare at night.

DAY 1 (arrival and check-in day)

Upon landing in Tokyo it is recommended you take the Shinkansen for a true Japanese travel experience up to the city of Morioka, where you will be welcomed by your guides. You’ll then check in to the Hotel Grand Annex where you’ll get to know your fellow tourers over dinner and drinks. Your guide will also will run you through the tour, current conditions and weather and answer any questions you may have.

DAY 2 (first snow day)

Time to check out one of the snowiest resorts in Tohoku, Geto Kogen. As your guide drives up the road to Geto you'll see snow banks towering over the van and you’ll know you are in for a great day. Whilst it is relatively a small resort there are endless lines off the top lifts with plenty of terrain on offer and just yourselves to enjoy it as the locals stay stoically on piste. After skiing you may enjoy an onsen before the drive home and the tour welcome dinner.

DAY 3 – 6

The beauty of staying in the city of Morioka is not only will you be able to enjoy the nightlife of a Japanese city, but you will also be able to access multiple resorts, each affected by slightly different weather patterns. Every day your guide will be checking the forecast to see which resort has the best powder conditions. The guides will be able to choose from Appi Kogen, Hachimantai Shimokura, Tazawako, and Shizukushi. Each resort brings something different to your experience, with wide-open bowls, chutes, gladed trees, pillows and all-around fun-filled days. There are some great cultural sites and onsens on the way back to Morioka which we may stop at to soak the muscles ready for the next day's adventure. Each night your guides will take you out to sample the delicious local cuisine and hang at some cool bars.

DAY 7 (Morioka to Hakkoda) Transfer day

It’s time to say goodbye to the Morioka region and head north to Hakkoda. On the way we may detour to a fun ski area few know about, boasting epic tree lines and road drops off the back. Hakkoda is famous for the epic amounts of snow that blanket the mountain. The terrain is epic and one of our favourites in Japan. The powder is ridiculously deep and as it is further north, it is dryer too. For the next four nights we will be staying in the family run Hotel Azumashiya, a ryokan style guesthouse with lovely hosts, regenerative onsens, delicious food and the powder of Hakkoda and Aomori Springs a short drive away.

DAY 9 – 10 (Hakkoda and Aomori Springs)

Hakkoda like many Japanese resorts is pretty simple. One double chair down low for the beginners and one Ropeway (Cable Car) taking you right to the top. It was mainly built for sightseeing and hiking in summer but stories of epic pow, snow-monsters and endless terrain made it a mecca for powder hounds and backcountry skiers. Aomori Springs is little known but has some fun powder filled terrain. The lifted terrain off the back lift is Japanese tree skiing at its finest. If you have skins the terrain above it extends the fun even further! Each night in Azumashiya you will enjoy a variety of local cuisine and the final night includes a farewell dinner and Shamisen cultural performance.

DAY 11 (check-out and departure day)

All good things must come to an end. It’s time to check out and say goodbye to your new friends. After one last onsen you will check out by 10am and be transferred to either Shin-Aomori Station for your Shinkansen back Tokyo or to Aomori Airport for your flight home.

JAPANESE ACCOMMODATION

Some Japanese properties may differ from those encountered in Western ski resorts. Whilst hospitality and service levels often surpass Western standards, rooms generally have less furniture & hanging/storage space. Ensuites are generally smaller and some are of a modular design. Some Japanese properties also allow smoking in common areas & some guest rooms. Traditional Hotels or Ryokans often have rooms with Tatami Matt flooring and futon beds. Some rooms will not have ensuites and instead will have shared bathing in segregated bath houses or onsens. We will inform you of these cultural differences and you may be pleasantly surprised by how easily you can adjust to the Japanese way of life. If not please request a western style accommodation.

WAIVER

If you are participating in a Whiteroom Tour or are being guided by Whiteroom you will be required to read and sign our wavier before participation. Failure to do so will result in you not being able to accompany our guides on any activity.
