Uzbekistan Powder Sessions

The Uzbekistan powder chasing sessions with The Adventure Project are ideal for those who want to travel to a new frontier of adventure skiing and snowboarding. Skiing in Uzbekistan holds an allure because tourism only opened up recently and Uzbekistan includes parts of the Old Silk Road in Central Asia that connects Europe with China. The mountains are impressive and the snow quality is often super dry, thanks to the country being double land locked. And great news for powder hounds is that competition for fresh powder in the off-piste and sidecountry terrain is very low.

The 11 day Uzbekistan Powder Sessions explore the big terrain in the Tien Shan Mountains in the Chimgan area. With the potential to ski three different resorts, ride quality untouched powder, and the strong cultural component, this will be an exciting adventure to a unique and exotic destination that should not be missed.

Tour Highlights:

  • A local guide, with the backup of an international guide, will show you the best stashes at 3 different ski areas: Chimgan; Beldersay; and Amirsoy
  • 7 full days of skiing/riding on offer (plus the potential to add in a half day in the PM on the day of arrival)
  • Accommodation near the ski areas will be in a comfortable 3-star hotel near the town of Chimgan
  • Jump on the high-speed Afrosiyob railway to Samarkand for a full day to explore this ancient Silk Road city with a local English-speaking guide
  • The trip will end with 2 nights in Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan, and include one full day of sightseeing around the city with a local English speaking guide.

Uzbekistan Ski Areas Visited

Amirsoy is the newest ski resort in Uzbekistan which opened in 2019 with 1 gondola and 1 high-speed detachable quad chair. The gondola accesses all of the best terrain. The vertical drop is 645m/2,116ft, with an elevation of 1,630m – 2,245m or 5,347ft – 7,365ft. The resort has 14.8km of slopes, but there is plenty of sidecountry access and untouched lines. The views from the top of the gondola of the Tien Shan mountains are stunning! Lift tickets cost approximately $US20 per day.

Beldersay has only 3.2km of slopes with 2 lifts (1 fixed double chair and 1 x T-bar, although the T-bar does not currently work) and has a decent vertical of 850m or 2,788ft, with an elevation of 1,500m – 2,350m or 4,921ft – 7,710ft. You walk onto the chairlift carrying your skis and then walk off at the top, Uzbekistan style. Again, there is great potential for off-piste skiing and ski touring above the chairlift, plus great skiing from the chair. Lift rides are approximately $2 a ride.

Chimgan has 1 main chairlift to transport riders to the flanks of Mt. Chimgan (10,856ft), with stunning views all round. You must walk onto the chair carrying your skis and then walk off at the top. The lift accesses elevations of 1,570m to 1,975 m, giving a vertical drop of 405m (1,328ft). Lift rides are approximately $2 a ride.

If you have any questions or want to ask about availability, you can make a booking request.

Equipment Required

As this is predominantly a sidecountry/backcountry tour, guests will need to carry full avalanche equipment (beacon, shovel, probe & first aid kit). In addition you will need up-hill climbing capability. For skiers, that means fat skis (recommended 110 mm under-foot or wider), with touring bindings and skins. For snowboarders, that could be either split boards/skins/collapsible trekking poles or board/snowshoes/trekking poles.

Ability Level

Guests must be advanced to expert skiers or boarders, confident in off-piste conditions that are rated double-black diamond in difficulty. You should be confident in deep snow and powder and be able to ride variable snow conditions.

Logistics

Guests must travel to Tashkent International Airport and arrive before noon on the day the tour starts. You can look at flight options here. Please check the COVID restrictions for any country you might have to transfer through, prior to booking your flight. Please choose a flight that arrives in Tashkent in the morning, so the group can depart at noon to Chimgan on the first day of the tour. One transfer to and from the hotel is included. There will only be one lift to Chimgan. If you cannot arrive by noon you will have to pay for your own ride to Chimgan. The guides can help you book that through the hotel.

It is recommended to arrive in Tashkent the night before the tour and stay overnight in Tashkent to catch up on some sleep. If everyone in the group does that, the group can leave early for Chimgan and potentially ski in the afternoon. Here are some options for  Tashkent Hotels.

Other

Credit cards are widely accepted in Tashkent and at the Amirsoy ski area. Dinners can be charged to the rooms. There are ATMs in Amirsoy and you will need to have some cash for skiing in Chimgan and Beldersay.

Uzbekistan uses 220V and type C and F power plugs. If your US (110V) appliances already have a built-in a/c adapter, then all you will need is a travel plug adapter. They are inexpensive and can be easily purchased on Amazon or at an electrical store. If you don’t have an a/c adapter for any of your appliances, then you will need a step-down converter to convert the 220V current down to 110V for your appliance. Again, you can purchase a step-down converter online or at an electrical store.

For the latest Covid information regarding the entry requirements of Uzbekistan and restrictions for COVID, please see here.  It is your responsibility to keep up to date with the latest COVID restrictions/requirements for Uzbekistan. All guests must comply with local COVID rules and regulations in Uzbekistan. Guests can receive a rapid PCR test at the hotel in Tashkent, prior to departure for their home country, if this is required. If you receive a positive test and have to extend your stay, you should have travel insurance to cover any additional costs associated with a positive COVID test.

Some foreign visitors will need a tourist visa for Uzbekistan (US citizens will need a visa, UK citizens do not). This visa must be obtained prior to departure to Uzbekistan. You can apply for an E-Visa. It costs around $20 USD and normally takes 2 business days to process. You will need to submit your personal details, select your intended travel dates, upload a photo with a white background showing your uncovered head and upper shoulders, upload a digital copy of your passport, and pay the fee. Visas are good for one entry and last for 30 days. You can apply no more than 90 days out from intended date of departure. Passports must have 1 free visa page and be valid for 3 months beyond the date of arrival. More information about visas can be found here.

Travel insurance is mandatory for ALL guests. The insurance must include trip cancellation insurance. You should have a high degree of medical coverage and should be covered for any additional expenses for any COVID related travel delays. You need to be also covered for travel to Uzbekistan, off-piste skiing, trip cancellation/delay, emergency evacuation and other items.
