Pow Perfection in August!!!

Like every serious skier, skiing in the summer in South America has been on my bucket list forever. What a great way to check it off! Nevados de Chillan is an amazing ski area with fantastical terrain formed by a still active volcano TheAdventureProject.net specializes in trips that get you away from the crowds and into the backcountry. Day one for us was an inbounds whiteout as a storm pounded the area. The result on day two was lift served bluebird pow perfection all day! Day three required only short skins to access endless bowls of untracked for as many laps as we could handle. Two of our subsequent days were all day tours to experience the magnificent terrain that surrounds the volcano. Other days were spent on a mix of avy training, exploring, repeating our favorite runs, and even technique lessons. Matt, the owner of TAP, is not only an expert backcountry guide, but he has spent almost a lifetime as a ski instructor with the highest professional ratings. And he loves to teach :>)
The accommodations are very nice, convenient to the resort and the food was either provided by the lodge or we went out walking distance to eat at a choice of venues. Matt always likes to have a “cultural day” (rest day) on his trips and we went to Chillan to tour a local winery and then out to dinner after.
Fantastic trip. All you have to do is get to Concepcion, and Matt takes care of all the rest.

I have gone to Chile with The Adventure Project for several years now and this year I decided to mix it up a bit and hop off the snowboard and back on to my skis. I took a skier improvement clinic with Matt the owner of TAP and the focus was groomer to backcountry skiing techniques . I had come from a fairly strong skiing background but, never took any clinics on updated skiing techniques. WOW! The amount of improvement in just a few days along with some video analysis was amazing! I feel even stronger on my skis and in the backcountry. Matt truly is an incredible instructor and has been teaching for over 19years, his knowledge is vast and he has a lot of drills to dial your skills. Highly recommend skiing or snowboarding with TAP in Chile. As with all of TAP's destinations there is always a local guide and TAP guide with you making the experience extra special. Plus the food and wine in Chile is world class!!

I have been on several trips with T.A.P ( India and Japan) This however was my first time trying out the southern hemisphere. Was really looking forward to skiing the Andes and Matt did not disappoint!! As always everything from the hotel to the food and transportation was amazing!! The skiing was epic! Huge open bowls and great side country access. Matt and I even did a nice skin up in between two volcanoes and had an amazing ski out, prob close to 10-15 kl long!! Best part it took you straight back to the resort :) Cant say enough great things about Matt and his team, from their safety first attitude, to their willingness to give powder tips when necessary. You want an amazing experience then sign up for next year, you won't regret it!!

Nevados de Chillan- Top Notch

This was an overall amazing trip I would rate in the upper echelon of all I've done to include Alasak heli-skiing and Japan. Matt at The Adventure Project provided great instruction on getting to the location and was always available for questions. The hotel, Las Hualles, was very nice and seemed relatively new with a great lodge and really comfortbale rooms/beds. Francisco, the owner, was great and the meals were fantastic although they were large enough to feed two people. We definitely took full advantage of the hot tubs in the evening. Although I was worried we were going to suffer the brunt of a particularly warm late season there and get skunked on snow, the snow gods smiled upon us and within a day or two of being there we received several storms that delivered enough snow to give us absolutely epic days, many of which were done under the backdrop of deep blue skies. Our guide, Eric, was extremely knowledgeable and knew the area very well. He took us to some amazing, beautiful terrain including a trip into the sidecountry where we skied volcanic ash-stained snow down to an amazing hot springs and then skinned back up to the top of the ski area- a perfect cap on the trip. I've been communicating with Matt almost since the inception of The Adventure Project and am glad to have finally been able to go on one of his trips. I am certainly impressed with what he has done and would recommend it highly to anyone who wants to get out to some exotic ski destinations. T.A.P. has put together something special for sure.

Matt with the adventure project is a consummate guide. I would recommend him for any of his international ski trips. As a former ski instructor and guide for many years, he is a total professional and takes his job very seriously. Matt emphasizes safety first and provides comprehensive avalanche training and knowledge prior to the backcountry. In addition ,he listens to any group concerns or wants and makes sure he tailors the trip to your individual needs . He provides all the details you need for a successful trip at a great price and wants you to have a safe, fun, rewarding time!

I can't say enough about the Adventure Project team and the amazing trip they put together in Chile for august 2017.
The trip exceeded my expectations in every aspect - the lodging, the food, the transportation, the resort and the quality of the snowboarding & skiing and especially the team.
This was my first trip with the Adventure Project but not my last! I'm already signed up for their Japan session for February 2018.
Fantastic backcountry touring trip to Nevados De Chillan! Super impressed by Matt and his guides' professionalism; dedication to researching weather, snow conditions, the best lines; commitment to client satisfaction; memorable photography; and rapport with the locals.
BE READY TO BREAK YOUR FUN METER

Special thanks go out especially to Matt, Francisco, Jaime and Bárbara!

Los veré muy pronto mis amigos!!!

I had a great time skiing in Chile with Matt. The resort is ideal for easily accessed side-country skiing with very little to no competition for fresh tracks. Matt brings great knowledge and professionalism combined with a sense of humor and passion for finding the best lines to ski. The accommodation is modern and comfortable and the food is easily some of the best in town. All these factors combine to make for a really enjoyable trip and I strongly intend to return next year.

Sessioning the Sidecountry with The Adventure Project

This experience with The Adventure Project ranks up there on my ski trips worldwide. Matt Appleford arranged a wonderful trip that incorporated resort and sidecountry seamlessly. The accommodations were great, as was the food. My only reason for 4 stars on the lodging is that the hot-tub was an extra charge and had to be "arranged"---I believe brought up to temp) which, frankly, I was just too tired to do after skiing all that powder. The room was great, the bed comfortable, the host Francisco, charming.
Matt has a great sense of how to balance fun, exciting skiing with a professional's view to your safety. I intend to go with Matt to Japan and experience that country next. All in all, I recommend this trip and Matt Appleford without reservation. Here are some excerpts from Facebook posts I did: "Matt Appleford and I hiked off the top of the Otto chair and then skinned into a huge series of bowls below the volcano where we came upon this strikingly situated shrine. Though it lacked a sign describing its dedication, and its intent beyond worship shall remain a mystery, it was a solemn and serious place to appreciate the moment and to contemplate our mortality. And yes--afterwards the skiing was fun! In the evening we had a great meal at the Cabanas Los Hualles (our hotel) and a wonderful bottle of wine provided by the winery we will visit on Thursday near Chillan with Francisco J Penafiel , our gracious host (and owner of Cabanas Los Hualles) , who has made all the arrangements...Amazing bluebird powder day at Nevados de Chillan with Matt Appleford. We got up early , got there early, and it all paid off. We were first in line for the Otto chair, a relic of a lift that takes 22 minutes from mid-mountain to get to the top. I estimate the temperature at around 20°F, with a little fresh overnight. Matt and Francisco, our local guide and the owner of our hotel, Cabanas Los Hualles , led some great lines..."
