Turoa Lodging Options

Ohakune New Zealand

There is no on-mountain accommodation at Turoa, but plenty of accommodation can be found in Ohakune, the closest town to Turoa ski field only 17 kilometres down the mountain. Ohakune is a sleepy, laid-back town with a population of 1,200. However, the town swells with tourists and becomes a busy hub on weekends in peak season (July/August).

Ohakune is known as the North Island’s après ski capital. Curiously enough, it’s also known as the capital of the humble carrot. Apparently, they thrive in the rich volcanic soil of the area. Potatoes are also a significant vegetable here, as are parsnips, brussel sprouts (hands up if you didn’t say yuk!), cabbage and cauliflower!

Ohakune Accommodation

Ohakune offers a good range of lodging options to suit various budgets, from backpacker and B&B to self-catered units, motels and hotels.

The Powderhorn Chateau offers hotel rooms and suites, as well as self-contained accommodation. It has a fantastic bar and a restaurant, and it’s ideally located at the bus stop to get to Turoa, next door to the Turoa Snow Depot for equipment rentals, and just 300m from the train station.

The iconic Kings Accommodation on Rimu Street, just above the Ohakune Railway Station (one of the most photographed stations in New Zealand) is a perennial favourite. The historic building offers quality accommodation for all budgets. There’s a bar, café and lovely restaurant.

If you’re traveling to Turoa with your extended family or a group of friends, you might want to check out Rocky Mountain Chalets. It’s a string of modern chalets with up to 4 bedrooms. We’re talking designer furniture, ensuite bathrooms and galley chef style kitchens, fit for the most discerning guests. And it’s only 200m from the shuttle bus stop to get up to Turoa.

Another option is to stay in Whakapapa accommodation in Whakapapa Village or National Park.
