Where is Yamaboku Wild Snow Park?
Yamaboku Ski Resort is located in the Nagano Prefecture, to the east of Nagano City. The
Yamaboku Ski Resort is situated on the south west flank of Kasagadake in Takayama Village.
Yamaboku is:
- 8.5km east of Yamada Onsen village
- 34km southeast of the town of Yudanaka (when you drive in via Yamada Onsen) which makes a great base to visit various ski resorts
- 27km southeast of the town of Nakano
- 32km east of Nagano City
Driving to Yamaboku
If you’re not on a guided tour, the easiest way to get to Yamaboku is to drive there. The phone number for GPS navigation is 026-242-2505. Come in from the Obuse region on Prefecture Road 66, and as you get closer, the access road is a slow drive because it’s narrow and steep. You know it’s a narrow steep road considering there are lots of mirrors on the corners! If there’s lots of snow on the road you’ll want to have a decent AWD or 4WD.
Public Transport to Yamaboku Ski Resort
If you don’t have wheels, you can catch a train from Nagano to Suzaka train station (takes 17-27 minutes), and then a bus to Yamada Onsen (about 30 mins), and on weekends there’s a shuttle bus from Yamada Onsen to Yamaboku Wild Snow Park (about 30 mins). If you’re staying in Yamada Onsen, some of the ryokan and hotels offer shuttles to the ski resort.
Ski Resorts Near Yamaboku
Yamaboku is located near
Shiga Kogen and it’s only 11km by road from the Kumanoyu ski area of Shiga Kogen in summer, but the road’s not open in winter.
Manza Onsen over in Gunma Prefecture is just to the southeast, but in a similar vein, it is not accessible by road during winter.
For a prefecture that has an abundance of ski resorts jammed together it’s somewhat surprising that there aren’t any ski resorts that are just a short drive to Yamaboku in winter. Distances and travel times from Yamaboku Wild Snow Park:
- Kurohime Kogen is 48km to the northwest (1:10 hours)
- Madarao is 43km to the northwest (1:10 hours)
- Kijimadaria is 44km to the NNW (1:10 hours)
- The lower part of Shiga Kogen is about 46km by road (1:10 hours) to the north.
