Central Region
Just to the north of Kyoto train station is the central zone of Kyoto. This will put you close to the Imperial Palace and Nijō Castle, and you’ll be close to the Karasuma Oike Station, and a couple of kilometres from Gion. This a good all-rounder zone.

Nakagyo Ward Accommodation
Higashiyama (Eastern Kyoto)
This is the district between the Kamo River and the many temples of Higashiyama/East Mountain. It also includes the very popular geisha district of Gion, and you’ll be close to the temples etc of the Philsopher’s Path. Accommodation here includes urban western style hotels, hostels, and ryokan. Gion itself has some splurge worthy options, whilst other parts of Higashiyama are more reasonably priced.

This part of the city also has lots of historic shrines and temples and the gilded pavilion of Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion). This zone has hotels as well as guesthouses and self-contained accommodation.

Western Kyoto/Arashiyama
This is a pretty zone between central Kyoto and Arashiyama with its hills with trees and bamboo forests. The northern end has lots of temples.
Nishikyo Ward Accommodation
South / Minami Kyoto Hotels
This zone is where most of the former capital was situated and is a nice spot to stay away from the hordes.
The Fushimi Ward to the south and east of the city is good for those looking for affordable accommodation.
