Ski Touring Tromsø & Lyngen

Multi-day Guided Backcountry Ski Touring & Splitboarding at Tromso & The Lyngen Alps, Norway

If you love ski touring & splitboarding on untracked mountains late in the season, discover that there is nowhere better than the mountains & fjords of the Lyngen Alps near the capital of the north, Tromsø. Stay in a magnificent cabin right on the seaside and surrounded by spectacular mountains. Ski from summit to sea, enjoy the northern lights and relax in a Norwegian sauna, wondering why it took you so long to come here!

Lyngen Alps are an iconic backcountry ski region in the far north of Norway, and this tour spends a week with an exceptional guide, such as Núria Picas, skiing in this Arctic paradise, later in the season when the days are getting longer but the snow is still in fine condition in the Lyngen’s higher mountains & glaciers.

The cabin for the seven nights of the tour is located in the small hamlet of Koppangen, right between the best mountains in the Lyngen Alps, some of which can be accessed directly from the cabin with skis on straight from the door. The cabin is about 20-minutes by car from Lyngseidet, the main town in Lyngen, with a few bars & restaurants which the tour group can visit.

It is possible to reserve individual places in an open group or creating your own group of friends and organizing a private trip; maximum capacity 7-people + mountain guide. Ski weeks are organised according to level of ability and objectives, with every effort made to match you with the group that best fits your profile, ensuring the best ski touring experience possible.

Highlights

The tour is loaded with highlights, but here are a few of them:

  • Ski from the summit to the sea.
  • Breathtaking scenery.
  • Exhilarating climbs.
  • Incredible summits & terrain.
  • Sauna after skiing.
  • Northern Lights.
  • Top ski guides.
  • Lifelong friends, stories & memories.

Join a fixed-date, 8-day tour from April to early May as a solo, couple or group. Or you can customise your own private tour if you have a group of at least 4 people. Make a Tour Booking Enquiry ->

The Skiing

The Lyngen Alps are about 90km long & 20km wide with the highest point being 1,834m above sea level - literally! The range includes glaciers, steep couloirs, gentle bowls & some tree-skiing down low, plus there are many other small islands connected by ferry that expand the possibilities for a land-based tour. Summits typically skied in the Lyngen Alps range in altitude from 1,000 to 1,500m above sea level, with descents going all the way down to sea level in many locations. Surrounded by water in every direction, it is one of the places where the saying "skiing from the summit to the sea" makes absolute sense. Because of the relatively harsh climate, the treeline is somewhere between 300 and 400m, which provides very easy access to the incredible alpine terrain, and also delightful tree-skiing down low if the visibility is poor up top. With such a dramatic landscape, many summits are perfect for ski touring and well worth a visit. Fastdalstinden, Trolltinden, Storgalten are just a few names on the extensive list of the favourite mountains.

Program

The main airport in the region is at Tromso (TOS). From there the group will take the vehicles and go to the beautiful seaside cabin near the small hamlet of Koppangen, which will be your base for the week. Six full days of stunning ski touring in the region will follow, before returning to Tromsø for departure. For private groups it is possible to extend the number of days on the tour. For detailed information, see the Itinerary tab.

Lodging & Meals

The program provides accommodation in a fully self-contained seaside cabin located near the best skiing in and around the Lyngen peninsula in the village of Koppangen. Right at the foot of the mountains, with the sea in front. The main village in the area, Lyngseidet, is about a 20-minute drive away. Some of the peaks can be accessed directly from the cabin, others require a short car journey to get there, whilst some locations may require a ferry ride across the fjord as well as driving. In the cabin, bedrooms & all facilities are shared. If you want a single room, please indicate this at the time of booking. The tour organisers believe solo travellers should not have to pay more to travel so our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not involve a single supplement. Single travellers joining group trips are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip.

For meals, a common shop will be made and the costs divided among all participants. The tour guides will be in charge as organizers and based on their experience of many trips, to help in management of the purchase and quantities. Work will begin before departure to speed up the process upon arrival. If you have allergies or preferences, let the tour operator know before departure. A 'deluxe' option that includes a chef and prepared meals can be provided for an extra tariff.

It is recommended that you bring your own energy bars, nuts & snacks so that you can eat while doing the activities. They can be purchased upon arrival during the first day shopping expedition. You can each bring your own alcoholic beverages, or they can be purchased once in Norway, but at Norwegian prices!!

An evening trip into the main town of Lyngseidet for dinner and/or beers is possible if the group wishes.

Ski Ability, Fitness & Gear

For this ski touring trip, an intermediate to advanced level of off-piste skiing/splitboarding and having previously done some ski touring activity (randonnée / ski touring / backcountry skiing) is required. Depending on the physical and technical level of the participants and the snow and weather conditions, the mountain guide will adapt the outings for maximum enjoyment. Do not hesitate to make a booking enquiry to jointly evaluate whether you have the appropriate level of skiing.

If you know that you prefer to go far and steep and are looking for a challenge, the advice is to bring along your group of friends and book an entire mountain cabin for yourselves. Weather and snow conditions will, of course, determine what and where can be skied. Even if you already know each other, we can still tailor the level more to your wishes and skill level.

To make the most of the tour you should at a minimum be fit enough to at least undertake a 1,200m climb in 3 to 4hr, then be able to safely descend in variable snow conditions (powder, crud, crust, ice).

For this tour, all participants will need to bring their own ski-touring & splitboarding gear, including all avalanche safety equipment.

Itinerary for 8-Day Ski Touring Tromso-Lyngen Alps

DAY 1: Travel to Tromsø, Arrival

There are good connections with airlines such as Norwegian or SAS to Tromsø airport (TOS). Upon arrival, the rental vehicles will be picked up and loaded, before heading to the cabin at Koppangen, amongst the highest mountains of the Lyngen peninsula. The 2-hr drive to the cabin is spectacular and includes a ferry crossing of a fjord, plus a stop along the way will be made at a supermarket for the purchase of food for the group’s meals. Everyone can have a say in the purchase, but the guide will coordinate it all.

DAY 2 to 7: Skiing in Paradise

Each night, the whole group will evaluate the different proposals and mountains in the area, then decide, together with the guide, on the best plan that suits everyone for the following day. Most of the peaks in the Lyngen region rise over 1,000m above sea level; keep in mind that the group will start skiing right from the beach (or the roadside as the case may be!). Some of the most popular peaks worthy of skiing in the region include Fastdalstinden, Trolltinden, & Storgalten …

If the group wants, one evening (or more?) it is possible to go out for dinner or have a few beers in the nearby town of Lyngseidet.

DAY 8: Departure, Travel to Tromsø Airport

On this last day we will pack our bags and leave the cabin early to drive to the airport and take the return flight.

EXTRA DAYS: Ski Trip Extension Option

For full groups (minimum 6 people), the departure dates, route, and trip duration can be customized. Don’t hesitate to contact the tour operator via the Tour Booking Request ->

Note: This is an indicative itinerary only. Dependent on weather conditions, avalanche risk, and group level, it will be adjusted to ensure the highest level of safety and enjoyment for all participants. Meals will be adapted to the ski itinerary. There are options to also combine skiing with other interesting activities such as sauna, swimming in icy waters, cod fishing, or simply exploring the incredible fjord landscapes.
