Lynx Freeride Cat Skiing Packages

Overview

Lynx Freeride prowls the fringes of the ominously named Accursed Mountains – a range of high alpine peaks & lakes on the Kosovo/Albanian border. These alps remained isolated & largely forgotten to all but a few intrepid locals. They are also called by the less interesting name of the 'Albanian Alps' and are the southernmost part of the Dinaric Alps. Maybe because of the region itself and its murky history, the mountains are amongst the wildest places in Europe, providing the last untouched habitats for wildlife that is extinct in other parts of the continent. Little over a decade ago it was ‘mission impossible’ to reach the upper alps in winter. Just recently, a few roads have been built in the area providing a base for cat ski exploration. Lynx Freeride describe this place as a virgin touched for the very first time.....!

Regarding the terrain itself, they don't like to brag about it but yes, they have it all and it's huge. High alpine terrain, forest runs, couloirs, big open fields and so on. Lynx Freeride guarantee you will not need to ski the same line twice! Hold them to it…….. unless of course the run is sooo good it deserves another crack at it.

The cat ski base is the petite, family-owned "Grand Hotel Gjeravica" located at 1,750m elevation. During the winter months it is reachable only by snowcat. One arrival you are definitely in the wild! The small but great crew will make sure that you have everything you need to enjoy the time on the mountain. For more info on how the week works, see the Itinerary tab.

Lodging & Food

Accommodation for entire week is the small "Grand Hotel Gjeravica". A family run business, it is situated just below the treeline at 1,750m elevation, surrounded by deep snow-covered forest. Rooms are all doubles or a bunk plus a single with ensuite bathrooms. There is no need for a menu 'a la carte' after you taste some of the local “organic by default“ cuisine that is served here, much of it cooked in a wood fired oven. The superb range of traditional cuisine will please everyone’s tastebuds. Local brews are available across the bar. For more detailed info, see the Lodging tab.

Snow, Vertical, Terrain & Winter Wilderness

Steep lines, big drops, gnarly couloirs, amazing forest runs but also mellow & chilling terrain, wide open bowls, long cruisy valley descents... you name it, Lynx Freeride have got it! Depending on the weather & snow conditons, plus the group's fitness, abiity & desire, over 3,500m of vertical is possible every day of the tour.

The proximity of the cat skiing to the Adriatic Sea has the effect of throwing massive snowstorms at the mountain range and providing deep powder on and around Kosovo’s highest peak, the magnificent Gjeravica mountain (2,656m). The peak forms the backdrop to an undiscovered freeride paradise - a virgin place that is a natural habitat for bears, wolves, lynx and other wildlife no longer seen in other parts of Europe.

For more information on the location of Lynx Freeride and how best to travel there, see our Getting to Lynx Freeride page.

Accommodation & Food

Grand Hotel Gjeravica & Self-contained House

For season 2023 we will have 2 different lodging option, one is small family Hotel Grand Gjeravica and the second is is a house located right next to the hotel.

Owned and managed by a local family, the Grand Hotel Gjeravica is located amongst the upper mountain forests of the Ereniku valley at 1,750m altitude. The hotel is on the south-face of Gjeravica peak making it the perfect starting point to cat-ski the region. During the winter months when the heavy storms hit the area, the small Grand Hotel Gjeravica feels like the biggest and best place you have ever stayed at.

Rooms are located in the upper-storey of the hotel & come with ensuite bathrooms. They are all light, simple, clean & wood lined. Bed configurations are either double or bunk plus a single. There are 4 double rooms and 4 triple rooms available at hotel each with bathroom.

In the house next door to the hotel, there are 3 double rooms and 2 triple rooms. The house has two shared bathrooms and a small kitchen that can be used by guests.

A self-sustainable electricity supply from combined water turbine and power generator if needed, means no major power outages in this remote hotel & house. The Internet will work until snow covers the antennas, in which case you can assist on a “rescue internet” mission and help dig it out.

Note: Due to the limited number of rooms, room selection is not left to the guests. This way the hosts can always make sure to accommodate the guests in the best way possible, such as assigning single rooms to solo travelers or shared rooms to groups traveling together.

Food & Drink

There is no need for a menu 'a la carte' after you taste some of the local “organic by default“ cuisine that is served here, much of it cooked in a wood fired oven. The superb range of traditional cuisine will please everyone’s taste buds. An open fireplace on the hotel's multi-purpose ground level will help you enjoy a bit of après ski with no worries for your beer supply - there is plenty of it …… and it's cheap. Lynx Freeride are also “Sabja“ ambassadors - the first Kosovo craft beer.
