Fenis Castle, Aosta Valley, Italy
Fenis Castle (a.k.a. Castello di Fénis) is a fantastic, easy to visit, 14th century fortress in the Aosta Valley. You can wander around its exterior walls, admiring the towers & battlements for free, or pay to enter and go on a guided tour of the interior, if for no other reason than to understand how the wealthy of the day took a poop!
Castello di Fenis is located in the heart of the Valle d'Aosta in northwest Italy, just off the motorway only 15km (20min drive) east of the city of Aosta.
There are several wonderful, discreet, restaurants (like Trattoria Le Bourg) nearby where tasty local cuisine is to the fore. Staying nearby overnight is most convenient at the Hotel Comtes De Challant, which is a short, but vigorous walk from the castle and nearby restaurants.
