Activities & Tours

Fernie Activities

The Fernie ski resort offers various programs of activities that might include: cowboy camp sleigh rides, kids’ après; family games nights; on-mountain dine around; and winter survival skills. There are also a myriad of other activities that you can book directly or through Guest Services at the resort.

Fernie Cross Country Skiing

Fernie Alpine Resort has 14kms of groomed and track set trails for cross country skiing. There are no trail fees, and guided tours and lessons are available but there’s no rental equipment at the main base of the resort. Try the Quest shop at the Lizard Creek Lodge for on-mountain rentals, or Fernie Sports or Ski Base in town.

Nordic skiing is also available at Island Lake Lodge with a X-country adventure on the trail up from the car park to the lodge, or on a variety of trails around the luxury lodge. The cross country skiing can be combined with a gourmet lunch or a spa treatment – decadent cross country skiing!

Beginners should try the cross-country skiing at the Fernie Golf Course.

Fernie Cat Skiing

Cat skiing is an awesome powder skiing experience, and the Fernie area is lucky enough to have two cat ski operations.

Fernie Wilderness Adventures is based about 20 minutes out of town. Their skiing area is akin to one big backcountry terrain park with lots of jumps, quarter pipes and hits galore. They are the day cat skiing specialists, or you can stay overnight at the Fernie Wilderness Lodge and sample the powder for multiple days. See our FWA cat skiing review and video for more information.

Island Lake Lodge is located 15km from the town of Fernie. Island Lake Catskiing provides indulgent and luxurious multi-day cat ski packages that include accommodation at the Island Lake Lodge and the famous Island Lake gourmet food. They also offer day cat skiing on a standby arrangement. See our Island Lake cat skiing review and video for more information.

Family Activities

Family activities include sleigh rides and ice skating. Fernie also has an aquatic centre (250 Pine Ave Fernie) in case the kids need to let off a bit more steam.

Adventure Activities

For a barking good time there is dog sledding in Fernie.

Or if you want to pick up the speed a bit, there’s always snowmobiling with Prestige Tours who offer rides from 2 hours to full day tours, evening tours, and spa packages.

Leisure Activities

Fernie Nature Tours offer a variety of relaxing guided snowshoe tours through gorgeous forests, including a tour that passes through the infamous Island Lake land. Or in the evenings take a snowshoe tour under the illumination of headlamps and enjoy a decadent chocolate fondue beside a cosy fire. Year round they also offer historic downtown Fernie walking tours.

A great après activity is a brewery tour at the Fernie Brewing Company on highway 3. Tours are run on Wednesdays and Fridays at 3pm (250 423 7797).

Lizard Creek Lodge at Fernie Alpine Resort features “The Spa” that offers standard spa treatments, hydrotherapy and various speciality massages such as raindrop therapy.

In town there are a couple of massage clinics and of course there’s the famous day spa at Island Lake Lodge.
