Aomori & Morioka Trip - New for 2027

The Aomori and Morioka Trip from Sherpa's Ride takes in many of the best ski areas of the Iwate and Aomori Prefectures of Honshu, plus a ski resort in the Akita Prefecture. You'll get the best of both worlds on the trip by being based in the cities of Morioka and Aomori where you'll enjoy the restaurants and bars, yet during the day you'll head to quiet ski areas and backcountry zones to enjoy the tranquility of the mountains.

About 70% of the skiing/riding will be lift-accessed terrain, whilst approximately 30% of the time you will be ski touring or splitboarding further into the backcountry zones.

Highlights

  • Your guide will show you plenty of stashes in varied terrain across an abundance of different ski areas and backcountry zones that can be accessed from your bases in the cities of Morioka and Aomori
  • Ride lift-accessed terrain and venture further afield into the backcountry on some days or when conditions dictate
  • Enjoy the convenience of being driven to different ski areas/zones each day
  • Stay in Morioka and Aomori with proximity to a variety of dining options of your choosing

From the base in Morioka, your guide will be able to choose the best option for each day. Freeride resort options include Tazawako, Geto Kogen and Amihari Onsen.

From the base in Aomori City, lift-assisted options include Aomori Spring with access to Mt Iwaki, and Hakkoda.

Ability & Fitness Level

Itinerary

Flexibility is the key and this is a sample itinerary The itinerary will be adjusted according to weather and snow conditions and guest requirements.

Day 1 - Arrival
  • You will be picked up at the Shinkansen station in Morioka and driven to the hotel in Morioka.
  • Head out for dinner. During dinner the guides will briefly talk through the plan for the rest of the week.

Day 2 - Tazawako

  • Tazawako is one of those places that feels quietly underrated from the moment you arrive. The Tazawako Ski Area sits above Lake Tazawa, and on clear days the views alone are spectacular. The terrain is easy to lap, and the powder often stays untracked for longer.
  • In the evening there will be an avalanche awareness presentation.

Day 3 - Geto Kogen

  • Geto Kogen has built a strong reputation among riders who care less about resort polish and more about storm skiing, deep snow, and proper tree laps. This is one of those mountains where coverage builds fast, the snow keeps refreshing through the day, and the best runs are often found just off the marked pistes in the resort’s famous tree zones.

Day 4 - Amihari

  • Amihari has a much quieter, old-school feel than most resorts, and that is exactly what makes it appealing. The ski area is compact, with very few crowds and a relaxed pace. The top lifts, reaching above 1,300 meters above sea level, give access to some great and long backcountry runs.

Day 5 - Best of Morioka

  • The group will head back to the area most enjoyed so far, or where the snow will be best.

Day 6 - Transfer to Aomori Area

  • The drive to Aomori City in the Aomori Prefecture will take about 3 hours.
  • You'll be checked into a hotel in the Aomori City centre.
  • Head out for dinner.

Day 7 - Aomori Spring

  • Aomori Spring in the far north of Tohoku stays off the radar for most powder hunters. Excellent tree skiing is easily accessible and often remains untracked far longer than in Japan’s more famous resorts. The north-facing slopes hold drier snow, and the terrain is well sheltered during stormy days.

Day 8 - Hakkoda

  • Hakkoda is one of the snowiest ski areas in Japan. The Hakkoda Ropeway gives you access to countless freeride lines and also serves as a gateway to longer backcountry tours across the wider Hakkoda range.

Day 9 - Aomori Spring With Short Hikes

  • Aomori Springs offers great skiing right off the lift but if you’re willing to put on skins and tour for just 20 minutes, you’ll be rewarded with some of the best tree skiing you can get.

Day 10 - Backcountry Day

  • Mt. Iwaki, standing at 1,624 meters, is nicknamed the “Northern Fuji” thanks to its location and beautiful conical shape. Depending on recent weather and snow conditions, we can approach this volcanic peak from either the north or south. Starting from the Aomori Springs side can cut the touring portion by nearly 1,000 vertical meters. Or if the conditions don't allow, there are other backcountry ski tour options in the area
Day 11 - Departure
  • The guides will transfer you to the Shinkansen train station or the Aomori Airport.
