Southwest Backcountry

The Southwest Backcountry Tour from Rising Sun Guides is a ski touring / splitboard remote backcountry trip in the snowiest part of Hokkaido Japan.

The Southwest Backcountry tour is a bespoke trip for PRIVATE GROUPS only (4-5 in a group is optimal). This page provides a sample itinerary and sample pricing to get you started and you can make a booking request to tailor the trip to your group.

Southwest Hokkaido is home to the heaviest and most consistent snowfalls on the island, so it's no surprise that Niseko is extremely popular for destination ski travellers. The good news is that most of these visitors focus their attention at Niseko United and the other nearby major resorts, yet close by are some incredible backcountry touring areas receiving the same great snow without the crowds.

This trip starts in Niseko so you can settle in and have the opportunity to ski classic backcountry zones such as Mount Yotei (pending weather and conditions) or Shiribetsu before heading off to other parts of Southwest Hokkaido. As well as all the backcountry skiing, you can relax in the onsen, enjoy the food, and the Japan experience.

Highlights

  • 2 bases in the very snowy areas of Niseko and Otaru
  • Focus on backcountry touring & lifts may be used occasionally to assist with ascent - all guests must have ski touring or splitboarding equipment (rentals available)
  • The snowiest zones in Hokkaido
  • Option to add or subtract a day of cat skiing near Niseko

Outline of Sample Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive and transfer to Niseko.
  • Day 2: Guided backcountry powder skiing at Mount Shiribetsu or other backcountry touring area.
  • Day 3: Guided skiing on Mount Yotei or other backcountry touring area.
  • Day 4: Niseko region backcountry skiing. Transfer to Otaru after skiing.
  • Day 5: Otaru region backcountry touring.
  • Day 6: Otaru region backcountry touring.
  • Day 7: Otaru region backcountry touring with afternoon/evening transfer to undisclosed location in SW Hokkaido.
  • Day 8: Guided backcountry ski touring.
  • Day 9: Airport transfer and fly home.

There are limited guides available for these tours so you will need to be quick to lock down a tour & date. If you have any questions or want to check availability, please get in touch.
