No Frills But Adequate

19/01/2018
We quite enjoyed a couple of nights’ stay at Oze Park Hotel. It was a no frills hotel but effective!

The old lady running the place almost freaked out when gaijin arrived, like she’d never seen it before. She didn’t seem too keen to use google translate to communicate or listen to our limited Japanese, and she was incredibly nervous. We weren’t particularly fussed, and we met lots of fun guests that didn’t mind the language barriers.

It was a rabbit warren of a hotel and we had to concentrate to find our way between the dining area, the bathrooms and our room.

Facilities were pretty basic. The wifi didn’t work in our room and the drying area wasn’t very effective, so we just took our boot inners to our room to dry under the kotatsu. The communal bath was nice after a day of skiing, but only the mens bath was open whilst the ladies bath was empty.

Meals were somewhat interesting. We were clearly eating things in the wrong order, with the wrong sauce and the wrong implements and the little old lady kept coming over to try to tell us what we were doing wrong. It was nice to try lots of different Japanese treats for dinner, but I can only do dried fish for breakfast for a couple of days before I resort to just miso, nori and rice.

This is an inexpensive spot to stay and take in the real Japan. See our video here
