Geto Kogen Lodge

Geto Kogen Lodge

The accommodation is very basic yet inexpensive and very unique. The GetoKogen lodge is like a cross between an onsen hotel and a hostel. A highlight is the beautiful onsen that includes an outdoor area that overlooks the snowy surrounds.

Where is the GetoKogen Lodge?

The Geto Kogen lodge is at the base of the Geto Kogen ski area in what you’d classify as a ski-in ski-out location. It adjoins with the day lodge of the ski resort resort.

Accommodation

The sleeping facilities are like an upscale version of dormitory accommodation and a spacious version of a capsule hotel. The accommodation consists of one big room sleeping up to 88 people in 2 storey generously sized bunk beds. The beds have 3-way walls, a curtain, a light, and power point. And these are solid wooden bunks, not the type that wobble when the person above you rolls over!

Bathrooms are shared facilities (downstairs from the dorm room) with bathing in the onsen. The onsen is rather lovely and for each gender it includes a lovely indoor bath as well as an outdoor bath that overlooks the snowy surrounds and the valley. A family room with 4 bunk beds is also available.

Facilities and Services

  • Lovely onsen – indoor and outdoor baths
  • Sauna
  • Chill-out lounge
  • Wifi
  • Ski and snowboard rentals in the day lodge next door
  • A couple of the staff speak English
  • Lift ticket sales

Meals

A buffet breakfast is served daily which includes some hot fare.

You’ll want to get dinner included in your package. Dinner usually consists of a small buffet or a simple set menu. You can BYO drinks or partake in a local Geto Kogen beer.

Good for a Couple of Nights

A lovely onsen
Sturdy beds
Nice breakfast view
The communal lounge
Chilling in the evening
We’ve stayed at the Getokogen Lodge (the Geto ghetto) twice now, and it certainly did the trick for skiing at Geto Kogen. It was very quiet in the evenings, probably because everyone was shattered after a big day in the powder.

The accommodation was simple – like an upscale version of a capsule hotel, the main difference being that the beds were very roomy and comfortable. It was incredibly quiet despite sleeping in such communal quarters. The only problem was that we couldn’t negotiate to get the heating turned down so the place was like a hot box.

One downside was the walk down a big flight of stairs in the middle of the night to go to the toilet.

A highlight of the lodge was a great chill out room that has comfortable day beds. Decent wifi was available. The meals were simple but more than adequate. And of course the superb onsen was a highlight.

It sounds primitive but it is really cool!
