Overview

This could be your private group's ski-touring nirvana. It is said that ,"If you were a magician and could produce the most perfect ski touring venue in the world, the island of Uløya in the Lyngen Alps region would be the result. You can go just about anywhere, and in the spring and winter powder snow is guaranteed. Nowhere else in the world it is possible to find thousand-metre slopes, inclined at almost any angle, perfect for experts or beginners alike, and falling right into the dark blue waters of the fjords."

A private tour week here is an unforgettable Arctic ski touring experience in the Lyngen Alps, led by a professional IVBV/IFMGA guide & staying on Uløya Island with full board lodging. It is possible to ski directly from your door or be transported by fast boat to neighbouring islands (or the mainland )for more skiing adventure. Get your private group of 3 to 6 people together for a week of exhilaration & fun in one of the world's best ski-touring locations. The season runs from the start of March to the fist week in May.

Skiing & Snow

Uløya Island has typical Lyngen Alps terrain with peaks to around 1,150m altitude (taller peaks are on the adjacent mainland), post-glacial lakes, and pleasant tree skiing in the lower 300m vertical down to the sea. Ski-touring is possible directly from the door of your accommodation. The skiing can involve straightforward ascents & descents back to the lodge; a 20km long, skyline 'Grand Traverse' of the island ending at another village; or boat & vehicle/ferry journeys to trailheads to ski peaks on the quiet islands Kågen & Arnøya, or even the mainland.

The Lyngen Alps region of Norway has deep snow from summit to sea level from mid-February to early May. You can expect summit to sea skiing during the tour, with powder snow in February/March, and more varying snow conditions later in April/May.

Program & Transport

The tour week runs from Sunday to Sunday and spends 7 nights on the island of Uløya. The program can be tailored to your private groups requirements, but in general is a combination of 6 ski tours starting directly from the lodges on Uløya, to tours from trailheads on the mainland with transport via cars & ferry, and at least two tours to other neighbouring islands transported by fast boat directly from the pier at Uløya. The program also includes time for a half day of seafishing. Ice climbing, avalanche training, and snowholing is also possible for private groups but requires arrangement prior to arrival. For detailed information, see the Itinerary tab.

Lodging & Meals

Accommodation is in one of two fully self-contained lodges located within 50m of the shoreline. The lodges have bed, dining, living & bathrooms plus fully equipped kitchens. A separate communal living/ding room with kitchen is on the pier overlooking the fjord. All meals are included on the tour if paying for the catered option. Self-catering is possible for a reduced tariff, using the kitchen facilities in each lodge apartment. If self-catering, you will need to bring in all your own supplies. For more information, see the Lodging tab

Ski Ability & Gear Rental

The private group package is for a minimum 'Intermediate' level skier, meaning you need to be a competent alpine skier (red/black runs), have some basic touring experience and be prepared & able to skin/climb and descend 800-1200m elevation per day. There is no ski-touring gear included in the price, however a wide range of ski equipment is available for rent, including top quality carbon MAJESTY skis (with ATK bindings as well as Dynafit sets), avalanche safety equipment (by BCA), climbing skins, pole, goggles, boots (selected sizes only), & backpacks.

Getting to Uløya Island

Flights & airport transfers to the tour base at Uløya are not included in the tour price but return transfers can be included for an extra tariff (see below).

To get to Uløya, the closest airport is Sørkjosen (SOJ), a journey of 28km (or around 55min) by road and ferry. Flights to Sørkjosen all come via a 25min flght from the regional airport at Trømso (TOS), which is itself a 2hr flight from Oslo (OSL). An alternative way to Uløya is to drive (or be transferred) from Trømso, a journey of around 4hr.

Return airport transfers from Trømso are from 2,000NOK/person, & from Sørkjosen are from 500NOK/person, additional to the tour price. If using this service, please book your flights to arrive in Tromso before 15:00hr and to depart from Tromso after 14:00hr.

Itinerary for an 8-Day Private Arctic Ski Touring Week

The itinerary for this experience is very flexible. There are many different routes that can be chosen depending on weather and snow conditions, and the group’s level of fitness and experience. The area in which the tour takes place is very remote and conditions such as storms, avalanches, road closures due to extreme weather or even water shortages, which may affect the itinerary and accessibility of some route options. Information below is a general guide to some of the possible options for tours during the week. Ultimately, your guide will decide about each trip based on current weather, snow conditions and safety precautions.

Day 1: Arrival to Uløya

Private transfer or public transport (depending on option chosen) from Tromsø (approx. 4 hours) or Sørkjosen (approx. 1 hour) to the ski touring centre on the island of Uløya. If taking a private transfer, please book your flight to arrive in Tromsø before 15:00hr. Here you will check in to your comfortable apartment for your first night in the beautiful Lyngen region.

Days 2-7: Ski Tours on Uløya, Lyngen Islands & the mainland

Each day your guide will choose a suitable route to showcase the best of this beautiful region, with tours adapted depending on the group’s level of fitness and experience and on weather and snow conditions. There are many possible tours to choose from. A vehicle is included for tours on the mainland, and also up to two tours using a fast boat to access additional regions such as neighbouring islands and the Lyngen Alps.
Possible peaks you may visit include:
• Blåtinden (1142m), accessible right from the door
• Saeteraksla (966m), accessible right from the door
• Kjelvagtinden (1104m) (ferry/boat)
• The Grand Traverse of Uløya, Uløybukt-Havnnes, 17 km, 2200m (boat)
• The traverse of Kågen Island through Redotinden (860m), (car/boat)
• The Crystal Valley (1020m), Kågen Island (boat)

• Many additional possibilities on the mainland and the islands
If you wish, a sea-fishing excursion can be offered as an alternative to one of the ski days, when you have a very good chance of catching dinner! It is not uncommon to catch 30kg of fish during a trip, but if you’re lucky enough to beat the current record and catch a halibut weighing more than 77.6kg, you’ll get a free bottle of wine!

Day 8: Departure

Your week of ski touring in the Lyngen region draws to a close. Breakfast followed by public transport or private transfer to Tromsø for onward travel. If taking private transfer, please book your flight to depart from Tromsø after 14:00hr.

Meals (Fully Catered Option)

The tour includes high quality house-made meals based on local fresh ingredients. Combining the local specialties such as reindeer, various kinds of fish, fresh mussels, fiskekake (Norwegian-style fishcakes) with international cuisine creates a fusion allowing you to taste Norwegian North with a touch of foreign influence. A source of pride is the selection of soups based on Norwegian tradition of nutritious food enriched with an international spice, particularly appreciated in winter after a long and successful tour.

The day starts with a breakfast consisting of yoghurts and muesli, selection of meats and cheeses, and on request an omelette of various kinds or eggs.

Lunches include a local polar-bread sandwich, prepared for you to take away for a tour, and you will have a selection of snacks and fruits for your choice. Hot flasks are also offered.

For dinner we typically prepare nutritious soups of all kinds (Uløybukt fish soup and bean/lentil soup being our pride) or fresh mussels as zuppa di cozze, followed by a course of baked fish, fiskekake, reindeer stew, Finnmark schnitzel or a raclette with pickles. An addition of various kinds of potatoes or long forgotten types of groats (such as millet once widely used in Norway) complements the meal.

The local crystal-clear water and soft drinks (apple juice, coke) are always available for you during meals. Alcohol can be purchased onsite or you can bring your own.

5.2 The tenant is obliged to leave the holiday home in a tidy and thoroughly cleaned condition. The tenant shall in particular pay attention to cleaning of the refrigerator, freezer, stove, oven, grill, bathroom and sanitary installations. The holiday home must be left in the same condition as one would like to acquire it. Costs for missing or inadequate cleaning will be billed the tenant. Even if the tenant has booked final cleaning, this does not exempt the tenant to arrange the dishes, empty the refrigerator and tidy in and around the holiday home before departure.
5.3 The tenant is obliged to compensate any damage caused to the property, residence with inventory, boats, engines, equipment etc. and has a corresponding liability for such damage caused by persons participating in the rent or which the tenant otherwise provides access for to the properties.
5.4 The tenant may upon arrival be required to submit a deposit for a total amount of NOK 2000 per unit, and if applicable one boat. For boats beyond this number, a deposit of NOK 1500 per boat may be required. The deposit will be repaid to the tenant when the tenant returns the unit and the boat in the agreed condition.
5.5 It is the tenant’s responsibility to hold the appropriate certifications in accordance with Norwegian law to operate a boat. Defects, Complaints and Remedies

7.1. Any complaints must be notified the local holiday home owner immediately and at the latest within 48 hours after the rental period starts or the discovery of the damage/defect, and in any case before the end of the tenancy. If the damage/defect is not or may not be rectified on site, a written complaint must be sent ZAPA DA within 30 days after the rental period ends. ZAPA DA is obliged to answer the tenant within 6 weeks after the complaint has been received.
7.2. There is a defect if the holiday home differs from what is agreed or assumed in the contract and this is not caused by the tenant or due to circumstances on his part. Deviations from the agreed are however not considered a defect if it is of minor importance, or are of a kind the tenant must assume may occur from time to time. The same applies to differences in natural conditions ZAPA DA or the holiday home owner neither knew of nor could have knowledge of or control over.
7.3. Some differences in quality, location, equipment, etc. between the different holiday homes at each resort must be expected. Furthermore, some difference between the homes depicted in marketing materials and the holiday home the tenant actually is assigned must be expected. Such differences do not constitute a defect. The fact that other tenants have a holiday home with a different quality, location, equipment etc. than tenants’ holiday home, does not constitute a defect in the tenant’s holiday home.
7.4. The tenant undertakes to contribute to minimizing damages, defects and flaws, and help to keep losses as low as possible for the holiday home owner and ZAPA DA. ZAPA DA shall be allowed a reasonable time period to correct or remedy any damage or defect.
7.5. ZAPA DA reserves the right to, if possible, and in ZAPA DA’ sole discretion, to remedy any damage or defect by repositioning the tenant to another holiday home of similar price and quality.
7.6. ZAPA DA is only liable for direct economic loss incurred by the tenant. ZAPA DA cannot be held liable for indirect loss (consequential damages) or damage of non-financial nature (ideal damage). Compensation cannot be claimed for any loss or damage caused by the tenant’s own negligence or condition.

ZAPA DA’s Responsibility

8.1. ZAPA DA provides rental of holiday homes, boats and related services. In the unlikely event that a rental agreement is not able to be carried out due to reasons beyond ZAPA DA’ control, that could not reasonably have been expected to be taken into account when the agreement was concluded, and that ZAPA DA could not have avoided or overcome the consequences of, ZAPA DA can cancel the rental agreement with repayment of the already paid rent. ZAPA DA will, however, if possible, and in ZAPA DA’ sole discretion, offer the tenant a similar holiday home.
8.2. ZAPA DA is not liable if the journey is incomplete as a result of obstacles mentioned in Section 8.1 that occurs after the journey has begun. If the journey is cut short by ZAPA DA due to such conditions, or the tenant cancels it due to such conditions, the tenant will nevertheless be entitled to a proportionate price reduction. ZAPA DA, to the extent possible, obliged to eliminate any risk or inconvenience to the tenant.
8.3. All forms of transportation booked through ZAPA DA are the individual transport company’s sole responsibility. Liability in connection with e.g. delays, missed connections, etc., though not limited to this, lies with the individual transport company. Thus, ZAPA DA assumes no responsibility for transport. The transport companies’ terms and conditions shall be provided for the passengers upon request.
8.4. ZAPA DA can not be held liable for loss arising from theft or other external influences which may affect the tenant’s personal belongings, etc.

Force Majeure

9.1. If the implementation of the rental is made difficult or impossible due to force majeure events, such as war, natural and pollution disasters, epidemics, closed borders, traffic conditions, arrest in the currency trade, strikes, lockouts, and similar conditions, which could not have been foreseen when the agreement was concluded, ZAPA DA may cancel the agreement. ZAPA DA can not be held liable for any loss incurred as a result of such cancellation.

Miscellaneous

10.1. ZAPA DA’websites, catalogues and other marketing materials are all subject to errors. ZAPA DA is not economically liable for any typographical or other unconsciously misinformation which may cause damage to the tenant.
10.2. Disputes between tenant and ZAPA DA shall be resolved amicably. If the tenancy is a package travel under the Package Tours Act § 2-1 (i.e. if the agreement includes additional services in addition to rental of holiday homes), the tenant may bring disputes with ZAPA DA before the Package Tribunal free of charge.
