Local Ski Hill in a Backcountry Mecca

01/02/2021

Skiing Dalvik is not about the lifts & piste (they are too limiting), but all about the surrounding countryside on the Troll Peninsula. The weather can be a challenge in Iceland, with the wind a constant companion, but once it settles, the experience is tantalising. Sadly, our trip was cut short by covid.

Access the region from Akureyri airport (flight from Reykjavik, rent a car locally). Stay at a local guesthouse (preferably a farm stay) and ski tour from your door. Warm up on the lifts when they open in the afternoon midweek. Buy some local woollen clothing. Ski-tour the many peaks and slash fresh lines down to the coast. Heliski for at least a day. Eat & drink at the Gisli Eirikur Helgi café bar, then soak, eat & booze in the Beer Spa. Enjoy the solitude!
