Hume Hotel and Spa

Formerly known as the Heritage Hotel, the Hume Hotel in Nelson BC has been lovingly restored and provides a step back in time. Established in 1898, the hotel is now an enchanting landmark of Nelson. The hotel has many heritage touches with plenty of antique chic furnishings.

Where is the Hume Hotel?

The Hume Hotel is in Vernon St, in the heart of the town of Nelson. Nelson is in the southeast corner of British Columbia, Canada, in the Kootenay region. Whitewater ski resort is nearby, and the region is home to many cat skiing and heli ski operators.

The shuttle bus between Nelson and Whitewater stops at the Hume Hotel.

Dining & Bar

A freshly cooked to order breakfast is provided.

After getting home from a hard day skiing, it can be incredibly tempting not to venture outside in the evening. One of the good things about the Hume Hotel is that you don’t have to.

The Library provides a lounge setting for a quiet drink or formal dining. It has amazing décor including old rugs, upholstered chairs and fabric hung ceilings. On the weekends, live jazz music adds to the quiet ambience. The inexpensive menu is very extensive and includes steaks, burritos and the Italian special.

The General Store Restaurant has the same menu, but is more suited to family dining.

The pub, Mike’s place, also has the same menu, but is much more festive and has pool tables and big screen TVs. Or there’s the Spirit Bar, a nightclub.

And if you do want to venture outside, the Baker St restaurants and bars are only a hop, skip and a jump away.

Step Back in Time; A Wonderful Experience

20/01/2010
NB this review was written prior to a full renovation of the hotel

The Powderhounds chose to stay at the Hume Hotel because of a strong recommendation from friends. After staying at the hotel, the Powderhounds were not disappointed and the accommodation lived up to the high expectations that had been set. The hotel has historic grandeur without being posh or stuffy. And the elegance comes at a price that is very reasonable.

Don’t be fooled by the sloping floors as you walk down the corridors and wonder whether the hotel rooms will be dodgy. This certainly isn’t the case, as the rooms are tastefully decorated and ooze character and charm. Even though the rooms have historical furnishings, they also have modern touches. And you needn’t fear that the beds are from the early 1900s.

The laid-back yet professional friendliness of the staff was quintessentially BC.
