Skeena Cat Skiing

Skeena Cat Skiing has been providing northern BC cat skiing tours since 2011. The Skeena Cat Skiing team consists of people that are passionate about delivering a high level of customer service and qualified guides who ensure a safe and fun adventure. Click here for more information about Skeena Cat Skiing>>

New for the 2027 season: Skeena Cat Skiing has switched to 8-person maximum cats, which will allow for more skiing, less waiting, and greater access to terrain. There will also be fewer guests in camp for a more intimate and relaxed experience. Private huts will be available to any guest who requests one.

Private cats can be booked for up to 12 guests, and the 12th seat skis free.

Backcountry Base Camp

Stay in a unique tent-based village in northern British Columbia's backcountry and step out the door each day straight into the snowcat where you will be riding in just a few minutes. These aren’t little tents that you have to squeeze into on your knees and then sleep on a mat or camp bed – it’s not roughing it! The insulated rigid frame tents (like Quonset huts) are large, have proper single or king beds, heating, lighting and power points. And the communal tent is huge and includes comfie couches, a combustion fire, a bar, and plenty of dining space where you’ll partake in lovely meals.

The camp is in a remote location but because you stay in tents it seems to make it feel more remote, which adds to the special experience. At the backcountry base camp you’ll really feel like you’re getting away from everyday life.

If you’re looking for luxury cat skiing this is probably not the trip for you, but if you have an adventurous spirit (you don't need to be hard-core!) this is a fabulous backcountry trip with a unique backcountry slant on the style of lodging.

Access

You fly from Vancouver to Terrace (1.5 hours), rent a car and drive to Suskwa Lodge and then get a helicopter transfer up to the basecamp. See the Skeena Cat Skiing location tab for more info on where this adventure takes place.

Other Info

See the Powderhounds’ full review and terrain & snow tab for information on the cat skiing. If you have any questions or want to double check about availability, you can submit a booking request here.

Itinerary

Day 0- Arrival day (the day before the first day of skiing)

Fly into Smithers Airport or Terrace Airport and arrange for your own transportation to the Suskwa Lodge in time for the helicopter transfer into Skeena Base Camp.

Note that helicopter transfer from Suskwa Lodge (our helicopter staging area) to the Skeena Base Camp is an additional cost of $450 round-trip plus tax, subject to change. This is not included in the ski-package cost paid to Skeena. Due to helicopter travel, guests are limited to a total luggage weight of 35 lbs., including ski boots. Guests are permitted to bring one set of skis or snowboard, which are NOT included in the 35 lbs. If necessary, storage is available at the Suskwa Lodge. If weather prevents the helicopter transfer, guests will travel by vehicle and snowcat – at no cost.

Day 1 - 2/3/4 – Cat Skiing Days

Mornings
Each day you will awaken to a scrumptious breakfast. Daily breakfasts consist of fresh pastry, cake or muffins, home-made granola, yoghurt, home-canned fruit (peaches/pears) or fresh fruit, toast with home-made jams/jellies...set up as a self-serve buffet. A cooked breakfast is also served daily and is anything from simple bacon and eggs to fritattas, quiche and crepes. Breakfast is held in the common tent where you will also be briefed on the snow conditions.

During the Day
On your first ski day you will be provided with avalanche safety gear and you will be provided with a short session on how to use the equipment.

Throughout the day you will be provided with non-alcoholic drinks, snacks and light food on the snowcat so you don't miss any valuable skiing time.

An average day is 10 - 16 runs (10,000 to 14,000 vertical feet) and they have been known to do as much as 20,000 feet of vertical in a day. This highly depends on the speed of the group and whether you are there to max the vertical or to enjoy the moment and relax a bit.

Afternoon
In the late afternoon you can take a well earned rest in your tent, relax in the hot tub, or join in on après ski appetizers and drinks whilst socialising and reminiscing about the great day of skiing. There is very limited wifi internet available for you to catch up on emails with your family and friends (but not enough to download/upload photos and videos each day).

The bar will be open serving beer, wine and hard liquor.

Evening
Each night you will be refuelled with a 3 or 4 course dinner. The types of cuisine served include organic local beef, lamb and chicken, as well as wild meat (venison, moose, elk) and fish (salmon and halibut). After dinner if you are still peckish there is fresh fruit and cookies set out, plus a variety of other snacks to munch on (and any leftover dessert).

Then it's off to bed for a good night's sleep in your cozy tent to rejuvenate the body before doing it all again the next day.

Departure Day

After a full day of cat skiing (including breakfast and lunch on the run) and après ski appetizers in the afternoon, you will be transferred to Smithers Airport for your journey home or onwards.

Ideally you will transfer via helicopter or via oversnow & road if helicopter service is not an option.

There are evening flights to Vancouver or you may choose to stay in one of the Smithers' hotels.

Lodging

For guests at the Skeena Cat Skiing backcountry camp there are six, twenty 12x12 insulated "bedroom" guest tents, each with 2 single beds (or a king bed), a propane heater, coat rack, night table and electrical outlets so you can charge your phone/camera/computer. Comfortable bedding and towels are supplied, plus porta potty toilets.

There is a 40 x 60 common tent which provides ample space for the kitchen, dining and lounge area. The wood-burning space heater provides the heat as well as a cozy atmosphere. There is a drying tent that is heated to dry out your boots, gloves and outdoor apparel.

The well heated shower house has shower stalls, sinks and flushing toilets. Skeena Cat Skiing supplies organic shampoo, conditioner and soap. There is also a double outhouse.

There is no TV, no cell service and very very limited internet access. In addition to skiing and snowboarding gorgeous powder, a major objective of your stay at base camp is to fully relax and get away from it all.
