Bucket list pow day

After 30 years of snowboarding, two seasons in north America ( Whistler & Snowbird ) I was able to finally get a day of cat skiing in on our recent trip to Canada. My Son & I had an awesome day in waist to chest deep pow. Conditions were a little sketchy, 30cm overnight with rising temps and some wind which closed
some terrain. The guides started us on pretty easy terrain and got progressively steeper during the day.
Being so deep it was high intermediate to advanced boarding and some tight tree sections leading to more open areas. Massive tree wells to be avoided but the guides had us confident and hooting was heard all day.
Definitely recommend for anyone wanting to give cat skiing a go.

Best ski day I’ve ever had!!!! I will admit I was a bit nervous about whether I could ski this terrain. Our guide Mike was so good about insuring safety, and the tail Kevin gave me lots of great tips.

I’ll be back next year.

I really appreciate skiing with you guys, thank you very much for such an amazing day,

David

Fernie Wilderness Experience Cat Skiing

Wow, what a trip, the staff at FWA were all excellent. The lodge is pretty basic but very clean and neat, the little hot tub out the back in the snow was cool too.
Food was top notch, just what we needed after an awesome day on the mountain. The snow though! The pow was deep, fresh and untouched, we really lucked out with the weather. Not super steep or aggressive terrain, but a lot of fun. Some nice lines and drop-offs. Trees all pretty nicely graded too.
5 stars!

It was 3 weeks since the last snow fall and we (group of 7 advanced skiers and snowboarders) were a bit nervous on the snow quality, but FWA delivered way beyond expectations. They found the snow, fresh lines in on ridges and in forests, all around the mountain. The guides and driver are very nice, helpful and professional. Awesome experience !

We got there after 2 weeks of no snow, yet the guides were fantastic and found relatively un-tracked snow for almost every run all three days. The terrain skied is more or less tailored to the lowest level skier in the cat. We skied tons of blueish runs a few amazing blacks. Due to the the lack of snow, every run every day was either moderately or heavily treed.
The cat rides are between 20 and 40 minutes between runs when the powder is sparse and you will get 8 to 10 runs. If you want super steep you will have to book the entire cat.
Overall, a very cool place to ski and a little tougher to snowboard as most of the runs end on flat terrain.
Intermediate skiers will enjoy this taste of powder

My son and I had an amazing three days of Cat skiing with your operation. Communication with your office in setting up arrangements and coordinating getting to the lodge (as we came from Wasa) were excellent.
Guides were fantastic and were very considerate of each of the skiers abilities and interests. Guides were very good at finding un-tracked snow each run and each day. Hazards were identified by guides each run to prevent injury ...this was excellent.
Lodge is fairly basic but is fine for the amount of time spent there.
Soup at the end of the day was a nice touch.
Photographers were excellent, but the prices were a little high for purchase of digital files. If the prices were a bit lower, we would have considered purchasing many more pics.
Cats were great. Cat drivers excellent.

Staying in the Park Place hotel, FWA have an ideal position with the office in the reception so you can check daily what is happening weather and trip wise. Sadly we picked the worst year for snow it would seem for a decade (typical), but FWA were really helpful in trying to find the best day for the conditions and weather, for us and the rest of the group.

The staff and guides were really helpful and good fun, thorough in their professionalism and made the best out of a bad situation (snow wise). We had some fun runs and was superb to get out onto their private area and see the wilderness. Truly would have been epic had the snow dumped.

We will be back again (fingers crossed for the chapmagne snow we all hear about) and I would not hesitate to use FWA again, great terrain and great people. Many thanks.

Temp -4
20 cm of new snow over night with morning flurries.

Excellent crew. Thanks to Brian, Aaron and Matt for a great time. Great group of riders as well. Conditions could not have been better. Snow was great with varying depths. Good enough for a number of the natural drops. Nothing intimidating for the above average rider. Good number of runs. Managed 22 over the course of 2 days.

FWA

Bob Lagesa FWA Rock Garden The owners of Fernie Wilderness Adventure a Snow cat skiing operation in Fernie, British Columbia are all about having fun. FWA sits in the Lizard Mountain Range which is known for getting huge dumps of snow. With an annual snowfall of 400 inches you know you’re in for a special treat and it’s only a 3hour drive from Spokane International Airport.

FWA’s large tenure has plenty of terrain variations, open bowls, really good tree skiing, and then my favorite, The Rock Garden.

FWA has Three Bombardier Snow cats which hold comfortably up to 12 riders each. The cats are stocked with plenty of drinks and snacks and a healthy lunch making each cat ride a relaxing experience as you get ride to the next gladed tree run. There’s no going hungry with this operation.

FWA has quite an established road system that will put you over some great untracked and their longtime guides know the little honey holes and with all the different aspects, they can find good stuff for a long time even in a dry spell. It makes a huge difference when your guides know where to bring you in certain conditions. Typically at FWA you can get 10-12,000 vertical of untouched powder in a typical day and there’s both Daytrips and Multi Day Packages. The overnight accommodations come complete with a hearty breakfast and dinner.

The FWA lodge sits just a few miles outside of Fernie and it holds up to 12 guests for overnight excursions. It’s equipped with all of the modern conveniences of home including a wood fired hot tub.
