Where is Mount Bachelor Oregon?

Mount Bachelor (formerly Bachelor Butte) is located in the Cascade Volcanic Arc of the Central Cascade Mountain Range. The Mt Bachelor Ski Area is in Deschutes County in Central Oregon, 22 miles southwest of Bend, which sits on the western edge of the high desert. Sunriver is 19 miles southeast of Mount Bachelor.

On a fine day, you should be able to spot Mt Bachelor pretty easily, because it’s the highest land mass for miles around.

Bend Oregon is 129 miles east of Eugene, 132 miles southeast of Salem, and 159 miles southeast of Portland.

Flying

On the off chance that Mt Bachelor is your only destination or your first stop on a big road trip, you can fly into the Redmond Airport (RDM), which is 20 miles north of Bend. The airport receives direct flights from Denver, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Seattle and Portland. At the airport you can pick up a rental car.

Driving to Mount Bachelor

You’ll definitely need a car to visit Mount Bachelor in Oregon, and you’ll want to make sure you’re driving to Mt Bachelor via Bend or Sunriver, or your GPS might be trying to play tricks on you and take you on a summer-only road coming in from the south.

The road to the Mt Bachelor Ski Resort is one of the best we’ve seen (except those in Summit County Colorado where you just pull off the I-70). The road is definitely not windy or steep and it even has dual lanes towards the end.

The first parking lot is for the Sunrise Lodge, which has mostly beginner terrain above it. The second main parking lot is for the West Village Lodge (Main Lodge) and it is so big that you might need to pinpoint your car with the GPS so you can find it at the end of the day! The lifts service intermediate and advanced terrain, although the main base for ski school and child care can be found there.

Bus to Mt Bachelor

On Saturdays, there’s a bus from Eugene to Mt Bachelor.

If coming from Bend, the Mt Bachelor shuttle runs from the Bend Park-N-Ride lot on SW Columbia St between Galveston and Simpson. You’ve got to drive to the shuttle stop, so a Bend/Mt Bachelor trip is not something you can easily do without a car.
