The Ultimate Hut to Hut Ski Tour

Backcountry Ski Touring & Splitboarding Across 3 Countries in the Accursed Mountains

A unique winter journey, this hut-to-hut tour will take you on an amazing adventure through 3 different countries: Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro; and 6 valleys - a new one every day. Staying up high in the huts will allow the group to be completely disconnected from civilisation, where you’ll be able to enjoy the stunning beauty of these mountains and ski some of the most amazing lines ever. The tour operator, Lynx Freeride, usually prowls the fringes of the ominously named Accursed Mountains in snowcats, but on this trip the uphill is all human-powered enabling access to remote terrain that will thrill & delight in equal measure.

Groups of up to 8 guests, accompanied by 2 experienced guides, will set off on a mission through one of the most unexplored mountain ranges in Europe. This journey will take you to unreal ski areas with the possibility to ride really big lines, some of which are longer than 1,000 metres vertical. Depending on your ability, physical shape and weather conditions, our guide will carefully plan and adjust the route before each trip starts.

All the tough stuff is handled behind the scenes, so you can travel light and fully enjoy the experience. For more info on how the week works, see the Itinerary tab.

Lodging & Food

During your week-long journey, you’ll begin and end with comfortable hotel stays in the city, while the days in between we will be staying in local mountain guesthouses, where a warm meal and a cosy bed await after each day in backcountry. These welcoming places offer simple comforts that let you immerse yourself in the serene mountain environment. Accommodation during the week includes a night at the small "Grand Hotel Gjeravica", a family run business, and home to Lynx Freeride cat skiing, so you fully check out how that works too. Single rooms will used while staying in hotels, and by necessity, shared rooms in mountain huts and guesthouses.

While staying at the guesthouses, breakfast and dinner will be served. Lunch will always be enjoyed out in the field during the tour. It will be a pre-planned and prepared meal suitable for the activity. Food is wholesome and delicious. No one ever came home from the Balkans and complained about the food!!

Guiding

Experienced local mountain guides will lead the tour. Each tour will have up to 8 guests with 2 guides. The guide:guest ratio is 2:8.

Ski/Snowboard Ability and Fitness

Required ability is from strong intermediate to expert. Some previous ski touring experience in mixed snow conditions is preferred. Please be honest about your ability & experience.

A good level of fitness will you to get the most out of this tour. You should be able to complete and average daily ascent of 1000-1500m for 6 days in a row.

Getting There & Away

The start and finish point for the tour is the Hotel Carshia e Jupave, in Gjakova, Kosovo.

There are three airport options:

  • Pristina, Kosovo - about 2hr drive to the hotel.
  • Skopje, Macedonia - about 3½hr drive to the hotel (have in mind the border crossing between Macedonia and Kosovo).
  • Tirana, Albania - about 4hr drive to the hotel (have in mind the border crossing between Albania and Kosovo) .

AIRPORT TRANSFERS: The best option is to get a taxi transfer from the airport. The tour operator can organise your transfers through a trusted local partner that offers taxi services (for an additonal tariff). We do not recommend renting a car because you won't be using the car at any time during your stay. It is definitely a more expensive & time-consuming option than a taxi. Of course you can organise your own private transfers from the airport to the hotel ->
