Traditional Ski Culture Retained

07/01/2020
Chill out spot around the fire
The bar downstairs has a good vibe
Plenty of spots to hang out
Plenty of space at the foot of the beds
Pension Full Note Niseko
In a town of glitzy sterile apartments and uber-houses, it’s refreshing that there are still ski lodges that have retained the essence of a ski and snowboard culture. Pension Full Note has been renovated and cleaned up but it’s still delightfully old school with its wood panelled walls and ceilings, and lovely retro décor such as antique jumps skis, ski racing posters, and other tasteful ski lodge-type knick-knacks. It has a few quirky design issues such as steep narrow stairs down to the showers and very cramped toilets that were made for Japanese people with very skinny legs, but it sort of adds to the charm of the lodge.

The location was a major plus, right in the thick of the best dining spots in Hirafu and within easy walking distance of the Ace Family lift of Hirafu.

Another major highlight was the large yet cosy lounge area, with its sofas and open fireplace, and lots of tables. It was a nice spot to socialise with others or just chill out. Breakfast was served in this area, which included a different cooked plate each morning. The bar downstairs also had a great vibe and was a great spot for sharing the local goss.

The hosts were also a key part of what made this lodge special. They were very friendly and happy to share their knowledge of Niseko with guests. The lodge was incredibly clean and there were some nice little housekeeping touches such as fragrance sticks.

We stayed in a twin room which was larger than we were expecting so there was adequate space to sprawl our gear out. It was not a noisy lodge but it wasn’t quiet either as we could hear other guests and the music in the bar downstairs, but it wasn’t too loud and it didn’t go particularly late. Oh and the doonas were divine!

Pricing was in line with other similar properties in Hirafu.

Overall, we recommend this lodge if you’re looking for a well located low-key sociable spot to hang out with real skiers and snowboarders.
