Where is Karakol and Karakol Ski Base?

Click on the map icon above to see a map of the location of Karakol.

Karakol is located at the eastern end of Issyk Kul (Warm Lake) in northeastern Kyrgyzstan, not too far from China and close to the border with Kyrgyzstan. Even closer to the Kyrgyzstan border is Jyrgalan, an up-and-coming spot for winter sports, which is 62km northeast of Karakol and a drive that takes an hour and half depending on conditions.

Karakol is 400km east of Bishkek, the capital and largest city in Kyrgyzstan. The drive along the northern shore of Issyk Kul takes 5.5 to 6 hours. The drive via the southern coast of the lake takes a little longer.

Karakol Ski Base is on the slopes of the Tien Shan mountains, and 11km southeast of town (30 minute drive).

Travel to Karakol from Bishkek

Flying to Karakol

Karakol Airport (IKG) is located just 2.5 km northeast of downtown Karakol. It’s called an international airport as it used to receive flights from Almaty in Kazakstan, yet it now just has flights to connect to the Kyrgyzstan cities of Bishkek and Osh.

The airport is quite striking as it has a new fancy terminal that opened in December 2024.

Tour Transport

Considering the logistics involved with travel around Kyrgyzstan and that a ski/snowboard trip also has benefits associated with having a guide, being on a Kyrgyzstan ski tour that includes transport is a great option.

Bus to Karakol

There are inexpensive buses between Bishkek and Karakol. The trip may be overnight and takes 7 to 8 hours.

The other option is to take a marshrutka or public minibus between Bishkek and Karakol.

Note that the option to get a train along the lake to Balykchy only operates in summer.

Travel Between Karakol and Karakol Ski Base

There are no shuttles or resort buses between the city/town of Karakol and Karakol Ski Resort, so unless you’re self-driving or you catch a taxi, you might like the convenience of being on a multi-day guided trip such as the Kyrgyzstan Ski Adventure.

If driving, note that you’ll need to pay national park entrance fees each day. Whilst the valley road is paved, the last part is maintained yet unpaved so a 4WD would be ideal for snowy and icy conditions. Similarly the car parks near the base and adjacent to the Kapriz Karakol Hotel are not paved so your white Bogner pants might get dirty when it’s muddy.

Other Ski Resorts Nearby

The Jyrgalan Ski Resort (under construction) is the first of the trio of ski resorts under the Ala Too banner. The Jyrgalan Ski Resort has been home to the Kyrgyzstan Cat Skiing outfit run by Ryce, which will move just a little further afield.

Jyrgalan is 62km northeast of Karakol.
