We have heard and read big things about the skiing at Kleinwalsertal and hence had high expectations. However, our overall impression after two separate visits during season 25/26 is that whilst the ski region has potential, it is disappointingly underwhelming.

To summarise the ski areas on the Austrian side:

  1. Ifen is the region's best - stellar lifts, a decent skiable vertical, pistes for all abilities (long ones too up to 7km for progressing beginners), some off-piste; BUT it is relatively small in scope, upper mountain closes often when it is snowing, and like all of the Kleinwalsertal, can be hectically busy on the slopes (the modern high-volume lifts mean queues are at least kept to minimum!).
  2. Walmendingerhorn-Hueberg - fun upper mountain terrain and valley trail on Walmendingerhorn, some excellent mountain huts, and very good beginner terrain plus ski-in ski-out accommodation at Heuberg; BUT small ski areas, old, mostly slow lifts, too low altitude (Heuberg) and with too many long traverses needed to connect it all together.
  3. Kanzelwand-Riezlern - Effectively one long top to bottom run with a very good novice zone down low, good for connecting into Germany on ski; BUT far too crowded, dangerous, limited in scope and best avoided (but do read our Kanzelwand specific review to see when to ski it!).

The general altitude of much of Kleinwalsertal is too low for reliable natural snow across the resorts during the whole winter. The KEY to skiing here is to follow a storm, preferably midweek and not during a peak holiday period. It may well come into its own then, but so does everywhere else!

An interesting outcome of our visit was confirmation that I much preferred to say in Germany at lively Oberstdorf rather than be stuck in Riezlern, or a more isolated hotel further into the Kleinwalsertal. Don't get me wrong though, there are numerous outstanding hotels in the Kleinwalsertal, however they are simply not located well enough to any truly exceptional skiing to make a stay at them worthwhile for an experienced skier. Hence, I would take Oberstdorf, a bit of beer hall fun and diverse restaurants in the evenings over a stay in this Austrian enclave any day. If you are more after a quiet alpine holiday, then try locations like Mittelberg or the discreet Oberwäldele and Wäldele.

Despite all my negativity, I will revisit Kleinwalsertal to give it another go, but my advice to any serious powder hounds is to head somewhere else in Austria that is higher & less crowded. That's just about anywhere!!

For families looking for a good ski holiday location, Kleinwalsertal could be a good spot for you IF the snow is down to low altitudes. However these days, that very notion strikes this region out with regard to long-term planning. So as a ‘last minute, storm & cold snow are coming’ proposition, by all means ski and stay in Kleinwalsertal (and Oberstdorf ski areas too).

Visited Kleinwalsertal, which has multiple ski areas in a weird little pocket of mountains accessed via Germany. On the way to Ifen we had an emergency alert via mobile phone about avalanche risk and closures, which explained the traffic going the opposite way! Arrived at the Ifen carpark to be advised that it was not open and not sure when it might be. We chose to park and catch a bus to Heuberg and ski across toward hoping it was open! We then began an amusing journey on tracks that had a surprising amount of dirt for the snow cover, that crossed roads to take lifts eventually to the Walmendingerhorn ski area.

We made our way as high as possible via the cable car. Unfortunately the upper ski area at Walmendingerhorn was also closed. Nevertheless we skied some good steeps. Snow was pretty heavy but still fun. Some of the areas under the lift were pretty dodgy, hence the closures. Made our way out towards "Max's Hutte”. The snow was incredibly "diverse", there was some fresh on the edges but off that was glue and the runs weren't steep enough to prevent most punters from getting stuck. Stopped at Max's, one of the nicest huts of the trip. Cash only and homemade strudel - yum. Back to the glue and a few little gems in amongst the glue and humanity. Made it back to Ifen and skied some off-piste & sidecountry from the summit, also very glue like and generally not pleasant.

Stayed in Oberstdorf, just across the border in Germany! Loved it - special mention to the Oberdorfer Dampfbierbrauerei near the train station. Great brewery and ridiculously large servings of the meal specials. I had one of the best meals of duck ever:-)

Still not sure what to make of Kleinwalsertal. There was some fun and potential at Walmendingerhorn & Ifen, but as the season across Europe generally had high avalanche risks, would like to ski there with better conditions if possible. A visit here is best fitted in with other travels, rather than as a destination in and of itself.
